GM Is Ready To Lose Close To $9,000 On Every Bolt Sold

GM is expected to lose how much on every Bolt?!

Every Chevrolet Bolt that will be rolling off the assembly line will lose General Motors close to $9,000 once they are sold. This seems like madness, but according to a report from Bloomberg, there is some method to it.

Thanks to new regulations done by California Air Resources Board, automakers have to sell a certain amount of zero-emission vehicles if they want to sell other vehicles - primarily crossovers, SUVs, and trucks - in the state. These new regulations say by 2025, zero-emission vehicles need to make up 15.4 percent of the market. Since then, nine other states including New York have adopted these regulations. All told, these ten states make up 30 percent of the total U.S. auto market.

Take for example Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. CEO Sergio Marchionne revealed a couple years back they take a hit of $14,000 on every Fiat 500e sold. But if they wanted to sell Ram pickups and Jeep SUVs in California, they need to take the hit.

How does Bloomberg get the $9,000 figure? That's due to a source at General Motors who revealed the estimate is based on the Bolt's $37,500 base price. A GM spokesman declined to comment.

If General Motors is able to sell enough Bolts, they'll be able to gather enough credits to not only sell other vehicles which will make up for the Bolt's loss, but also be able to sell extra credits to other automakers. Tesla has taken advantage of this to great effect. In the third quarter, Tesla made $139 million from selling credits.

And there are people who never ever do that.... and just use their cars to get around town.

Face it... those of us who visit automotive enthusiast sites have different driving patterns.  Most people aren't like us.

Do you really think the typical Corolla buyer wants to spend any more time in or with their car than they have to?  An oil change is an annoyance to them

In this society of instant gratification people can not wait for nearly anything.

We have smart phones, chat and E mail to give new ASAP because we can not wait. We have fast pass at the amusement parks because we can't wait in line.

We have so many things to speed up the pace of our lives and unless you just happen to be some place that has charger and you plan to be there for a period of time few people will want to be bother to wait for the charge even on the faster charges. Travel it is out the window as who wants to spend a couple hours just off a free way in their Leaf?

The reality is we are not to the point these cars are for everyone or even the majority yet. In time we will get there but we are still not there.

As they imporve the advantages will increase and the disadvantages will disappear but again we are not there yet.

Once the EV gets to the point you can charge it as fast as a tank of gas that will be the one major tipping point. The next will be the ability to Charge it any where you can gas up even in Booger Hole WV. [I did not make that up]. Yes they have a gas station but now chargers there. Go figure. It was not all that long ago they may not have had electricity.

This is like Cell Phone coverage. At first we would travel and the cities had coverage but out in the country large areas of dead space as we traveled south. It took about 10 years and now there are few dead spots. This is the same on an even larger scale. Investment is difficult as there are so few cars and there are so few cars as there has been so little investment.

    Can you hear me now?

It is not just this but even Hydrogen powered vehicles are great and I have even driven one. But fueling up takes time to fill, It can be very cold and it is not on every corner as there are so few vehicles using it.

Time is money or time is a killer as it stops the pace of some peoples lives.

When I first got into shipping to customers it was just good enough to get the products to them with in a week. Then it was in a few days now they want things 2 days or less at no extra charge. They place the order and if it is not shipped in an hour and they have not gotten a tracking number they are emailing or calling as they want an answer now.

Even if the part is not in stock and needs drop shipped which would speed things up they get upset if the MFG does not ship till the next day.

I even get people who order on Monday and call on Tuesday wanting to know where their 2 day package is and want to argue that it was two days when UPS does not count Monday as a shipping day and you point out next day would be Tuesday.

This is the mind set in the public domain. Can't wait for much anything. from fast food to fast shipping.

In the early days the same thing was seen with the automobile as so often they broke down and got stuck. The first two decades it was more a play toy for most buyers as a horse was still more reliable. Over time advancements came and it adapted to more life styles and areas of the country. We will see the same but much is relying on the advancements of charging times and batteries.

Two observations here. I never though about it but WV is VW backwards and if only flux capacitor was real. God I need to get to bed earlier tonight. LOL!

    • I understand @Drew Dowdell 's concern regarding politics in this forum. But, what gets me, is that too many Americans are afraid to engage in 'politics'. Its like some sort of taboo.  Rule #1:  Do not talk about Fight Club politics Rule #2:  DO NOT TALK ABOUT FIGHT CLUB  POLITICS What is politics anyway? politics: derived from an ancient  GREEK word politika which means "affairs of the cities".   Polis is city in GREEK. Politikos in ancient and in modern Greek means of or relating to citizens which in turn there is another GREEK word politis which is citizen. Politics in English refers to the governance of an area.  And "governance" includes all kinds of stuff and ideas. And those stuff and ideas are governed by and to the people of that area. Much like that original Greek word and idea where the English word and idea comes from.   Politics is not taboo. Politics has been made taboo by those above us governing us to control us by simply telling us not to engage in politics.  To not share ideas.  To not talk about politics. I was asked to answer a question about caring. Caring about politics and about caring regarding our political landscape of our lands of where we reside and call home/home country. We also use an example to not talk about politics in these forums as an escape from the real world.  Because politcs are real tough. Yeah well...Ive defined politics in another thread in these here forums to which I just copy/pasted again. I also said in that thread in these here forums that we simply cannot escape politics.  We cannot.  And we have to care about politics.  Because caring about politics is caring for your community, for your well being for yourself in your community and for your fellow neighbours.  And as a WHOLE to progress and evolve and not devolve. Too many entities in the U.S. right now only want to MUZZLE information regarding politics and are only interested in spreading mis and dis information for not the greater good of the majority of the people but for benefit of a very select few. Simply stated: I simply REFUSE to be muzzled to talk about politics. I will continue to post articles that refute mis and dis information. Since the last time I posted in here, the current President of the United (HA!) States of America has gone  tariff wild. On and off and on and off only to put on more tariffs on foreign cars including those from Canada only to retreat that statement from cars coming from Canada that have at least a 50% American content in them and so forth and so forth. The problem lies that automotive treaties have been signed by Canada and the US regarding 60 years ago. This current deall at least.  The excuse being that President in charge wants to build the American automotive industry again. *SIGH* Mis and dis information Trump also has imposed tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminium.  *SIGH* GM and Ford of AMERICA uses Canadian steel and aluminium because the US simply cannot produce enough. *SIGH* All those factories that NEED to be built, where will Ford and GM get their steel and aluminum from? Canada? Russia? Trump keeps on saying that the US does not need Canada. But Canada needs to be American state #51   There is so much bullshyte from Trump  just from this single scenario that if Americans do NOT talk about politics, Trump and the powers that enable Trump will be duping Americans for a loooooonnnng time.  This rant ends. But Ill be back for mor political informing as it is MY duty to keep you informed.
    • Yes. I don't mind the black on black w/ my CT6 because I have plenty of shiny bits inside and out and some other color inside w/ the wood trim.  I couldn't stand everything black.
    • Agreed. If I was a bond villain, I'd go with the all-black. But I prefer brown or other colors.
    • Interesting...I like the look of the G90 exterior and interior... don't really care for the monochromatic treatment, though.  I like this G90 interior color scheme more..
