Chevrolet Brings Back the Blazer As A Crossover

      Not your father's blazer

Guys, the Blazer is coming back!

    Hooray!

Its going to be a crossover that slots between the Equinox and Traverse.

    *Blank looks from the crowd*

I'm sure there are some that were hoping that the Blazer nameplate would return on something similar to body-on-frame Trailblazer/Blazer sold in various parts of the world. But if you have been keeping a close eye on Cheers & Gears for the past year or so, then you would know Chevrolet has been working on a crossover to fill in the white space between the Equinox and Traverse possibly named Blazer. Tonight in Atlanta, Chevrolet pulled the curtain back on their new midsize crossover.

The Blazer looks to be a mashup of Camaro and the Nissan Murano crossover. There is a large grille, slim HID headlights, a rising window line that leads to a blacked-out d-pillar, and a sharply raked tailgate. Like the Traverse, the Blazer will have a RS model complete with blacked-out trim and 20-inch wheels. We find the Blazer RS to be a bit too much.

Inside, Chevrolet's designers appeared to have lifted the dash from the Camaro and dropped it in the Blazer. While stylish and driver-centric, it does also introduce some usability issues - see the small and crowded row of buttons for the climate control system as an example. The Blazer will debut Chevrolet's first Cargo Management System that uses rail system and cargo fence to split up the cargo area help secure cargo. All Blazers will get an 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, wireless charging, six USB ports, and 4G LTE connectivity.

Powertrains mirrors what you'll find on the GMC Acadia. This means a 2.5L four-cylinder with 193 horsepower and 188 pound-feet of torque, and a optional 3.6L V6 offering up 305 hp and 269 pound-feet. Both engines come with a stop-start system and a nine-speed automatic. Standard on all models is Traction Select that allows the driver to make adjustments to the vehicle's driving mode to account for different conditions. On all-wheel drive models, Traction Select can disconnect the rear axle when AWD capability is not needed. RS and Premier get a more sophisticated twin-clutch AWD system.

Chevrolet says the Blazer will arrive at dealers in early 2019.

Bold Design Defines 2019 Chevrolet Blazer

    • Attention-grabbing midsize SUV offers style and versatility

ATLANTA — Chevrolet is raising the bar on crossover design with the introduction of the 2019 Blazer as the newest member of the industry’s broadest, freshest crossover and SUV lineup since 2015. The all-new contemporary midsize SUV is rooted in attention-grabbing design with seamlessly integrated customer-focused technologies and superb functionality.

“Chevrolet has been at the forefront of each of the major automotive industry trends by anticipating consumer demand and delivering innovative products like Bolt EV, Colorado and Trax,” said Alan Batey, president of GM North America and head of Global Chevrolet. “The introduction of the all-new Blazer builds on that momentum and further strengthens the most comprehensive lineup of crossovers and SUVs on the market today.”

Slotting between the Equinox and Traverse, the 2019 Blazer will offer unique design elements on each model, appealing to customers seeking distinctive styling and outstanding utility.

    Highlights include:

    • Bold styling that features a strong grille and muscular proportions.
    • Driver-centric interior and distinctive looks on all models.
    • Model range includes sporty RS and up-level Premier models.
    • Five-passenger seating with up to 64.2 cubic feet (1,818 L) of max cargo space with second-row seats folded flat.
    • Adjustable sliding rear seat.
    • Available Chevy-first cargo management system with a rail system and cargo fence.
    • Available panoramic dual-pane power sunroof.
    • Suite of available active safety features.
    • Standard 2.5L I-4 and available 3.6L V-6 engines, each backed by a nine-speed automatic transmission.
    • Advanced twin-clutch AWD system available.
    • 4,500 pounds (2,041 kg) estimated max trailering with the available 3.6L V-61.
    • Available Hitch View feature that helps the driver align the hitch with the trailer.

    An SUV With Attitude
The 2019 Blazer is the boldest, most progressive expression of the Chevrolet crossover design theme. A wide stance, tight proportions, a high beltline and dramatic sculpting give it a toned, athletic appearance from all angles.

“The Blazer has attitude,” said John Cafaro, executive director, Global Chevrolet Design. “It looks commanding on the road, while fulfilling the promise of versatility at the heart of every Chevy crossover and SUV.”

Each model in the lineup offers a unique look with distinct styling to suit different customers’ tastes, including unique grille appearances, additional bright chrome on the Premier trim and a more sinister-looking, blacked-out appearance for the Blazer RS.

A powerful front end featuring a strong grille, athletic hood lines and low-placed HID headlamps distinguishes all models. The design also features a distinctive lighting execution that separates the headlamps and LED daytime running lamps.

Long, lean and sculpted body sides lead to a rear end highlighted by LED-illuminated Chevy-signature dual-element taillamps, dual exhaust outlets and an integrated tailgate spoiler. The Blazer also offers a range of stylish wheels, starting with standard 18-inch aluminum rims and expanding to available 21-inch wheels on the RS and Premier.

The Blazer’s cabin echoes the bold exterior theme with sporty good looks. The design emphasizes space, craftsmanship and customer personalization, with a wide range of interior styling choices for the different models, achieved through several color and trim choices. Sporty details include a padded knee area, round air vents and grab handles on the doors.

The new Blazer also offers a Chevrolet-first Cargo Management System, standard on RS and Premier models. It features a rail system and cargo fence to help secure smaller items by dividing the cargo area.

    Seamless Technology and Connectivity
The 2019 Blazer is designed to offer occupants seamless connectivity, intuitive controls and a host of convenience features that help make the drive more comfortable.

    Features include:

    • Hitch Guidance — Available on models with the 3.6L engine, it aids in aligning the Blazer’s hitch to a trailer by showing the center line on the rear-vision camera.
    • Hitch View — This available feature complements Hitch Guidance by showing a top-down view, making it easier to hitch a trailer without a second person to assist.
    • Electronic-locking glove box — A Chevy first, it offers added storage security, and is roomy enough to fit a small handbag. The glove box is locked with the vehicle’s Valet Mode, which is accessible through the Settings menu.
    • Automatic heated steering wheel and automatic heated/ventilated front seats — These available features work with Remote Start and/or automatic climate control to automatically adjust temperature to help maintain comfort.
    • Comfort-open windows — Activated by the key fob, this feature allows all windows to roll down to help heat escape before occupants enter the vehicle.
    • Heated outboard rear seats are available on RS and standard on Premier.
    • Adaptive Cruise Control and Rear Camera Mirror are available on RS and Premier2.
    • Hands-free power liftgate with Bowtie logo projection is standard on RS and Premier.
    • Wireless charging and six USB ports are available.
    • When it comes to connectivity, an 8-inch-diagonal color touchscreen running Chevrolet Infotainment 3 is standard, along with 4G LTE Wi-Fi (with 1-month/3GB data trial)3 and Apple CarPlay4 and Android Auto5 compatibility.

    Performance and Capability
The new Blazer is powered by a standard 2.5L I-4 engine rated at 193 hp (143 kW) and 188 lb-ft of torque (255 Nm). A 3.6L V-6 is also available, offering 305 hp (227 kW) and 269 lb-ft of torque (365 Nm).

Both direct-injected engines feature intelligent stop/start technology that seamlessly shuts off the engine when power is not needed, based on a variety of driving factors, and both are paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

“The Chevrolet Blazer is more than just good looks,” said Waqar Hashim, Blazer chief engineer. “Both the Ecotec® 2.5L four-cylinder engine and 3.6L V-6 engine are paired to Chevrolet’s nine-speed automatic transmission, providing drivers a great balance between performance and efficiency.”

Traction Select is standard on all models and allows the driver to make real-time adjustments to the vehicle’s driving mode to account for varying road conditions. On AWD models, it also allows the system to be completely disconnected from the rear axle, meaning drivers can opt to have their vehicle operate in FWD when AWD capability is not necessary.

RS and Premier models offer a more sophisticated twin-clutch AWD technology that helps optimize traction for every condition. It provides excellent performance in wet, snowy and icy conditions, while also providing enhanced stability in dry weather.

    Available Early 2019
The Chevrolet Blazer will arrive at U.S. dealerships in early 2019. Additional details and pricing will be announced closer to the start of production.

Murano is selling barely over twice the rate of the Armada. It could slide off into oblivion and I doubt many people would notice/care.

despite the fact that the similarly sized Rogue it shares the showroom with, which is a CUV by the way, sold over 400,000 units last year.......

the Murano which is in much higher price classes still sold 80,000 or so units.

that's a sizable market and its growing.

Chevy should have had a Ford Edge / Murano competitor by 2011 at the latest.  Not 2019.

Same reason GM did not put out crossovers 16 years ago (for the most part): BOF SUVs were way more profitable back then, at least until $4 a gallon gas and the recession killed a lot of them.

the last Blazers and Trailblazers were among the junkiest vehicles GM has ever built.

Nissan should have had a competitor for the SIlverado in 1980, not 2004 (BTW; still not a competitor).

Point being- I don't believe OEMs are putting the bloa-funked murano up as a target for product planners. Nissan's non-car sales ace is the rogue; everything else in their trucklet portfolio does so-so.

The last trailblazer still sold millions and if like I do, you got the limited production AWD SS you got your Corvette SUV. I like my SS very much as does everyone that has drove it or ridden in it.

Well there you go @regfootball , the sporty GM crossover you were asking for.

Me? I kinda like it, and I’m just glad there is the 3.6 liter instead of the 2.0T from the Traverse.

Good tie in to Camaro too, I wonder if there is actually any parts sharing there or just in appearance.

I really really like it. Bronco is nice looking also. Probably one of the best attempts for the domestics to win me back. BRAVO!

    • Its tastefully done visually on the outside.  My fear was all for nothing as I was envisioning aggressive spoilers and aero body kits.  Although the Lyriq V does have different  body work making it look like its slightly lower to the ground than the standard Lyriq and that extra body work is more sporty in nature, its not aggressive at all.  And the extra body work is very minimal. In fact, nobody would notice the design cues as a sport oriented model let alone a V model.  The V Lyriq just looks like a refreshed model for the new year.  And that is how I prefer the Lyriq V to be styled.   In my neighborhood, Chevrolet Equinox EVs and Lyriqs are ubiquitous.   The Blazer EV slightly less so.  Its too expensive.  The Equinox EV hits the spot at the cheaper end of the Ultium platfrom spectrum while the Lyriq hits the spot and the higher priced spectrum of this platform.   I saw up close and personal at the Montreal auto show, the Optiq, and the Optiq renders the Blazer EV uselessly obsolete. The Optiq has the same shape and silhouette as the Blazer, the interior is more luxurious as its a Cadillac all the while being slightly more expensive than the Blazer rendering the Blazer unneccesary.  I predict the Optiq will also be a sales success going forward while the Blazer not so much.
    • This is an intriguing future that KIA is envisioning with the different modules that they propose their PBV vans  be capable of transforming into and modules that be offered to be used.  Pretty impressive thought process and engineering.   I visited the Montreal auto show 2 weekends ago and saw Chevy's Bright Drop and was quite impressed with that family of EV vans, but if KIA succeeds with this idea and gives us this future, Id say this would be a far better design. I also saw VW's ID Buzz up close as well. Sat in the driver's seat, passenger seat up front and back. And although the discussion between a constant whining poster and David was that the VW's ID Buzz's exterior design is cuter, to which Id agree, and the interior is quite nicely done as well, the over all vision is bested by KIA.   VW is relying on nostalgia to succeed. Like how it was discussed byn this very whiny poster.  But...with a subpar EV powertrain to even GM's comparison of let alone Tesla,  and although w Tesla has failed to advance its superiority in EV technology over its competiton, KIA,  if they bring this future to reality, Id say KIA is killing it.  KIA is looking to the future not only to survive, but to take no prisoners and rule the EV world.   Id take future progress over nostalgic mediocrity any day of the week.   And athough Id buy an ID Buzz and proudly drive it even with the subpar EV powertrain as compared to its competiton, because the ID Buzz is that cute and fun to be seen in, its KIA that really desereves my tip of the hat with this concept. Well done KIA!!!
    • I didn't know I had this on my computer.  I thought I'd share it. They're all models of the retired QE2.  The order is actually bottom up instead of top down: 1.  As inaugurated, with an open passenger space or sun deck up top behind the mast. 2.  Still wearing its wartime gray, given that the ship was dispatched to the Falklands for the short-lived 1982 war between the UK and Argentina over the islands; also, the open passenger space or sun deck became the first block of 2-story penthouse suites, right behind the bridge. 3.  Returned to its true Cunard scheme, with the black hull, but now additional 2-story penthouse suites have been placed behind the initial ones and practically extending to the funnel; also, the funnel is a lot thicker since the ship was converted to run on diesel-electric power during a major overhaul.  This ship didn't get older ... it got better, and it hardly looked like a 39 year-old vessel at the end of its service life. They didn't have to max out the cabins for sharp pencils in that day, so this is 963 feet (longer than 3 football fields) of ocean liner with sleek yacht-like looks.  This ship was born beautiful.  If life ever takes me to Dubai, I will stay in the harborside hotel into which this ship was converted.
    • Very cool that Pizza Bank continues.  When the Seattle Link train finally crosses the lake, I may visit, ride on it, and might check their pizza, which was top notch, as was Pegasus's on the waterfront in Alki. - - - - - I am thoroughly disgusted.  Google Maps plans to relabel the Gulf of Mexico.  Much like Chicago's Sears Tower is still the Sears Tower to me and like Houston's Transco Tower is still the Transco Tower to me, the Gulf of Mexico will continue to be the Gulf of Mexico to me since this is about elitism and imperialism.  A certain individual cannot contain his hatred for that country.  Mexico may not be on my bucket list, but why take away this name, as if they gain that much from it to begin with?  I believe it was once the Gulf of New Spain, which would be okay since it's the gulf for many Spains, in a way.
