Spying: Cadillac CTS, Now On The Streets

    William Maley

    April 17, 2012

We last saw a next-generation CTS mule running around the frozen tundras of Canada undergoing some cold-winter testing back in February. Fast forward two months and two CTS mules are roaming the streets in a new set of spy shots.

As we reported back in February, the new CTS will use an extended version of the "Alpha" platform to help it better compete with the BMW 5-Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and Audi A6.

On this test mule, you can make out a large grill with two bold bars, projector headlamps with LED daytime runners, lots of radar sensors, and dual exhaust tips around the back.

The engine lineup will likely include 2.0T as the base engine, the 3.6L DI V6, and a turbocharged V6.

The next CTS is due sometime in late 2013 as a 2014 model.

< -- Ed Gein is an icon to some, movies have been shot based on him & about him, stories & books have been written, numerous songs have been sung. No matter if you approve of it or not he has created a lasting image in American history.

    Sigh.

Pop culture is not something you craft an upscale image around. A Cadillac dealer should not be an arcade, a parts warehouse or a greasy spoon. Who would've thought this was such an obscure concept.

Never mind you are not getting the full concept I would have in mind.

I am thinking of something more in line with the Penske Ferrari dealer in Vegas with elements like Mclaren is using by installing real F1 cars at in their dealers. The dealer would be more upscale and have a visual draw to it. Even some elements from the Corvette Museum in KY or the Peterson Museum. I want a Museum like quality but with a more luxury feel.

The example of the couch is only to show you can have reprduction items crafted to help style the building that would look and represent Cadillac that a GM dealer can afford. I would not put that couch in the dealer but I would comisson items that would fit into the proper decore.

Just doing a Art Deco style alone would have little effect on the non DTS lovers.

This is the time to think out side the box. Look around at what many upscale people are doing to their ultimate garages and you will see what they are intune with.

While I don't have an issue with some Modern Art Deco that is just not enough.

I've seen the Penske Ferrari dealer in LV...pretty nicely done. Penske also has the Penske Auto Mall here in Scottsdale..very nice block of stores--Ferrari, Maserati, Range Rover, VW, Acura, Bentley along w/ a racing museum. I was in a few of them a couple weeks ago, the VW one has several restored vintage VWs in the showroom--a '60s camper van, Beetle, a Thing mixed in w/ the new cars...I could see a large Caddy showroom doing something like that.

If the building is over all Modern with historical tie in of older vehicles and a few touches of pop culture, then I would say you could have a good dealership. Yet my 25 year old son and his friends had stopped by the house and and we were talking cars. It was pretty amazing to hear. They all seemed to like the Camero with the hints of heritage, but over all newer modern look. They felt the Mustange was an old dino that was holding on too tight to the past. They did love the pictures I showed them of what some says could be the new mustange.

A couple of them brought up the comment of why are people living in the past rather than moving forward with a modern future version that has complements to the past built into the future versions.

I think we can always acknowledge the past but must move forward with the future.

Yes the Penske Scottsdale is a good example of what I am thinking. Penske class and Penskes like of history and marketing is what I would like to see.

A good example today I thought of I would love to see is the use of some items like in the Historic Collection like some repo's of the old Neon and other hallmarks of the past but in a new setting. I really want to keep away from the Benz glass and aluminum look. Stone materials would give it a less dealer look and keep it upscale.

I also like what Summit Racing has used in Tallmadge Ohio and Atlanta GA. They have turn tables that are glassed half in and half outside the building. They put all sorts of cars on them on display. I have seen everything from a Allison powered V12 Art Artfons Green Monster and John Forces drag cars and even the real Bumble Bee from Transformers to my own car on them. They keep different cars on them monthly for evens and special displays of race and show cars. If the dealers had this GM could loan out cars like the Sixteen or other future prototypes on national tours where they could be displayed in dealers. On the tables they are safe and removed enough people can not touch them.

I really was blown away when I was asked to display my car on the table. I never thought anyone would ask for a Fiero on there. LOL!

The cars on each side rotate and are half in and are half outside. It is a real attraction with the righ cars up there 24/7. The sign over the doors is changed about every two years to new photo. While this is a nice building I would love a more natural material used for the dealership.

I think it looks too much like an automotive Best Buy to be a Cadillac dealership. Not at all "luxury"

Note I said I would not want these materials etc. The photo is to only point out the glassed in turntables that could be used in many styles of buildings.

This is a retail store and that is why it looks like a retail store.

By the way the inside is not best buys and is much more like the Old Race Rock Cafe crossed with an upscale department store than anything with large video screens and many old race cars and racing themed displays. It was very expensive to build.

The store is as much an attraction as it is a retail location. While I am not saying that Cadillac should do something just like this I would like to see Cadillac come up with a retail location that would be as much an attration as it is a place of buisness.

Another example here is a Harley store we have. They built the building with the front like a giant V twin engine theme to a very attractive California style building. It is very interesting to look at. Once inside they have displays of new and some old classic and historic Harleys. It has upscale Peterson Museum look about it that is not stuffy. Also they have a Harley style cafe that has good food and generates customer traffic into the show room that is not service related or sales related. I have heard the feel it has helped generate sales of accesories and even some sales when someone see's that bike they always wanted in person.

I know a resturant is a little much for most dealers but the concept of somthing other than sevice work and new car sales generating walk in traffic would be a good thing for a dealer if you can keep the sales people from attacking like piranna. I own my HHR SS today because I saw a new one on the lot and just stopped to look at it. 3 months later I called the salesman that offered me the keys in the first 5 mins for a drive to find the one I bought. I have no plans on a SS or buying a new car till I was drawn in.

I would like the Cadillac experience to be something that people could look forward too. Lets face it most people go to dealers now with the same mood as they do a Dentist for a Root Canal.

My GMC dealer and Chevy dealer both were low pressure and they both have treated me well. The Chevy dealers building sucked as it was a well beaten 1970 building. They have just built the new style Chevy building like you see on the commercials. It looks much better but It is nothing I am going to visit till I plan to buy a car.

I almost thing it is time for a car company to look for ways to make dealer more attractive for walk in visits. I think they should look for new ways to attract more people and new ways for profits.

I think in the future the dealer will have to change as many people now are buying on line and only go to the dealer when they pick up the car. I have done this aleady and I see the new generations doing this too.

I don't have the answer but I do feel it is time to reinvent the dealer.

The dealer should take a hint that people want comfort, new fresh place to visit with nodes to the historical past. They want to know they are buying a product that has a rich history and is here to last.

GM can so build modern places that are comfy to visit, showing their rich history and inovation and let the customer know they are here for the long haul.

You have the idea. I would like to see the service waiting room more like a club setting. Even a gas fire place would look nice in there.

Well I would expect GM only to offer coffee and soft drinks. I think Soup in bread bowls would be too messy and complicated. The Drink liability would be a little much. But I could see it helping when the service writer has bad news about a timing chain needing replaced. LOL!

I think a big screen TV on also would be nice with comfortable seating. A Good and Fast Wi Fi connection.

gonna gently nudge this back to the future CTS.

Any newer spy pics? I am intrigued abut the grille under that camo: it looks pretty much like the Ciel's grille :)

    • Sending a Christmas eve chuckle your way: Here's Dyan Cannon, who has again poured herself into her clothing, to attend a Lakers game, which she does often. It looks like she can easily fit down many chimneys.  Maybe even into a Christmas gift stocking. I find the different chapters of Dyan Cannon humorous.

    • MOU means that these companies have signed a "Memorandum of Understanding" to explore the participation, involvement and synergy sharing in relation to the business integration through a joint holding company. Back in August 1st, 2024 Nissan and Honda created a Joint Holding Company for the commencement of a strategic partnership focused on intelligence and electrification. This was to start the consideration towards integration of the two companies. Mitsubishi Motors has now signed onto this MOU to explore the possibility of achieving synergies at an increased level through business participation or integration. In basic terms, the three companies have agreed to join forces in sharing costs to move forward with EV platform R&D while they also look at the ICE "Internal Combustion Engine" gas side of having shared platforms to reduce costs and hopefully save the three auto companies by keeping them alive.  While Nissan and Honda have agreed to move forward in this integration of the two auto companies, Mitsubishi Motors will make a final decision by the end of January 2025 about possibly joining in with the integration of Mitsubishi Motors into this joint 3 auto company venture. Nissan and Honda have already agreed to a full SDV or Software-defined vehicles program moving forward that will allow them to have a solid crucial collaboration of intelligence and electrification for future products. Both companies have stated that the acceleration of technology and the rapid change of the auto industry will allow these two companies to maintain global competitiveness and deliver more attractive products and services for customers worldwide. Nissan global mobility product line merged with Honda four-wheel-vehicles, motor cycles and power products can allow both companies to become more attractive to shareholders and innovation of products to sell to customers worldwide according to the CEOs of both companies. Nissan and Honda have stated the following: Nissan and Honda aim to become a world-class mobility company with sales revenue exceeding 30 trillion yen ($190 Billion U.S. Dollars) and operating profit of more than 3 trillion yen ($19 billion U.S. Dollars). The expected synergies from the business integration at this time are: 1. Scale advantages by standardizing vehicle platforms By standardizing the vehicle platforms of both companies across various product segments, the companies expect to create stronger products, reduce costs, enhance development efficiencies, and improve investment efficiencies through standardized production processes. The integration is projected to increase sales and operational volumes, allowing the companies to reduce development costs per vehicle, including for future digital services, while maximizing profits. By accelerating the mutual complementation of their global vehicle offerings - including ICE, HEV, PHEV, and EV models - Nissan and Honda will be better positioned to meet diverse customer needs around the world and deliver optimal products, leading to improved customer satisfaction. 2. Enhancement of development capabilities and cost synergies through the integration of R&D functions In accordance with the MOU to deepen strategic partnership and the joint research agreement on fundamental technologies dated August 1, the two companies have started joint research in fundamental technologies in the area of vehicle platforms for next-generation software-defined vehicles (SDVs), which is the cornerstone of the field of intelligence. After the business integration, both companies will encompass more integrated collaboration across all R&D functions, including fundamental research and vehicle application technology research. This approach is expected to enable both companies to efficiently and swiftly enhance their technological expertise, achieving both improvements in development capabilities and reductions in development costs through the integration of overlapping functions.   3. Optimizing manufacturing systems and facilities The companies anticipate that optimizing their manufacturing plants and energy service facilities, combined with improved collaboration through the shared use of production lines, will result in a substantial improvement in capacity utilization leading to a decrease in fixed costs.   4. Strengthening competitive advantages across the supply chain through the integration of purchasing functions To fully leverage the synergies from optimizing development and production capacity, both companies intend to boost their competitiveness by improving and streamlining purchasing operations and source common parts from the same the supply chain and in collaboration with business partners.   5. Realizing cost synergies through operational efficiency improvements The companies expect that the integration of systems and back-office operations, along with the upgrade and standardization of operational processes, will drive significant cost reductions.   6. Acquisition of scale advantages through integration in sales finance functions By integrating relevant areas of sales finance functions of both companies and expanding the scale of operations, the companies aim to provide a range of mobility solutions, including new financial services throughout the vehicle lifecycle, to customers of both organizations.   7. Establishment of a talent foundation for intelligence and electrification The human resources of the companies are an invaluable asset, and establishing a strong human resource foundation is crucial for the transformation that will come with the business integration. After the integration, increased employee exchanges and technical collaboration between the companies are expected to promote further skill development. Moreover, by leveraging each company's access to talent markets, attracting exceptional talent will become more attainable. Method of business integration and stock listing Nissan and Honda, with the result of the consideration, plan to establish, through a joint share transfer, a joint holding company that will be the parent company of both companies. This will be subject to approval at each company's general meeting of shareholders and obtaining necessary approvals from relevant authorities for this business integration, based on the premise that Nissan's turnaround*1 actions are steadily executed. Both Nissan and Honda will be fully owned subsidiaries of the joint holding company*2. Additionally, the companies plan to continue coexisting and developing the brands held by Honda and Nissan equally. Shares of the newly established joint holding company under consideration are planned to be newly listed (technical listing) on the Prime Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange (“TSE”). The listing is scheduled for August 2026. With the listing of the joint holding company, both Nissan and Honda will become wholly owned subsidiaries of the joint holding company and will be scheduled to be delisted from the TSE. However, shareholders of both companies will continue to be able to trade shares of the joint holding company issued during this share transfer on the TSE. The listing date of the joint holding company and the delisting date of both Nissan and Honda will be determined in accordance with the regulations of the TSE. Regarding the organizational structure of the joint holding company, and both companies which will become wholly-owned subsidiaries of the joint holding company after the business integration, the optimal structure for realizing synergies, including the integration of R&D functions, purchasing functions, and manufacturing functions, will be discussed and considered within the integration preparatory committee, with the aim of establishing an organizational structure that enables efficient and highly competitive business operations after the business integration. The CEO's of all three companies had the following to say: Marking the announcement, Nissan Director, President, CEO and Representative Executive Officer Makoto Uchida said: “Honda and Nissan have begun considering a business integration, and will study the creation of significant synergies between the two companies in a wide range of fields. It is significant that Nissan's partner, Mitsubishi Motors, is also involved in these discussions. We anticipate that if this integration comes to fruition, we will be able to deliver even greater value to a wider customer base.“ Honda Director and Representative Executive Officer Toshihiro Mibe said: "At this time of change in the automobile industry, which is said to occur once every 100 years, we hope that Mitsubishi Motors' participation in the business integration discussions of Nissan and Honda will lead to further social change, and that we will be able to become a leading company in creating new value in mobility through business integration. Nissan and Honda will start the discussion from today onwards with an aim to clarify the possibility of business integration by around the end of January in line with the consideration of Mitsubishi Motors." Comment from Mitsubishi Motors Director, Representative Executive Officer, and President and CEO Takao Kato said: “In an era of change in the automotive industry, the study between Nissan and Honda about a business integration will accelerate synergy maximization effects, bringing high value also to the collaborative businesses with Mitsubishi Motors. In order to realize synergies and to make the best use of each company's strengths, we will also study the best form of cooperation.” Upon looking at the press releases, it makes total sense that these companies would look to merge as each company is having a challanging time. Nissan globally has seen a 33.7% reduction in sales taking the estimated 2024 market share to 5.2%.  Honda globally has seen a 9% reduction over all with a 32% reduction in the asian rim leaving them with a 2024 estimated 5.4% market share. Mitsubishi Motors globally has seen a reduction year over year of a 10.7% drop leaving them with a 2024 estimated market share of 4.6%. All three auto companies lag the industry in technology connected auto's, feature / functions and especially EVs. All three companies have seen their profits turn into negative earnings for their respective companies leaving them with no real ability to perform R&D in building EVs to compete in China or the U.S. let alone Europe that has mandates in place for the end of ICE by 2035. End result is it looks like for these companies to survive, merging into one company that shares platforms and technology especially in the software and battery sectors will be the only way to move forward. A Cutlass Salon coupe in perfect condition, the first year I liked the colonnade Cutlass (and it's last year, of 3, with round headlamps in the colonnade), those huge bucket seats, and, oddly, A/C is there, but with manual windows.  It featured the new but not as popular 260 (4.3L) V8.  It also featured the light enamel blue they didn't repeat.  If the exhaust system is tight, this car will be whisper quiet. 1975 Oldsmobile Cutlass Salon (Numbers Matching Drivetrain) for sale: photos, technical specifications, description See anything odd?  Come on.  Quick. . . . It has Buick rally wheels instead of Oldsmobile rally wheels. * sigh ... I wonder what time frame this ad goes back to *
