New York 2019: Cadillac CT5 to Debut

The all-new CT5 replaces the CTS in the Cadillac lineup

Cadillac will be unveiling the CT5 sedan at the New York International Auto Show next month.

The CT5 is build on the next generation of GM's Alpha platform and will come in rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations.  Power will be provided by either a 2.0T 4-cylinder or 3.0 Twin-Turbo V6.  Both engines will send power to the wheels via a 10-speed automatic transmission.  The CT5  will offer Luxury and Sport trims.

In a video series called "Sensory Symphony", Cadillac slowly peels back the specially design camouflage film to trigger an ASMR response in the viewer while slowly revealing the car. This is to bring awareness to the CT5's auditory experience with active noise cancellation and other sound optimizations.

The Cadillac CT5 will be built at GM's Lansing Grand River plant.

Do I get a Millennial Hug to make me feel better and Trophies all around so we do not forget to include everyone both winners and losers?

Course according to the 21st century parenting guide, there is no more winners or losers. Everyone is equal. ?

The car is growing on me more and more, but then I always liked the front half and the rear end. Just that weird part by the C pillar, but I do agree it will be a moot point once you tint those damn rear windows and realistically all of them. Still think that redish color is the best so far on this sedan.

Grew on me from git, but I see where the changes can be polarizing. The comments about the side window resembling the Accord are with merit.. But again I think they were fine like this too add a bit of youthful flare.. Which is now desperately needed in the segment of midsized luxo cars. Hence I have never dogged out Infiniti for its efforts.. As the 5 series A6 and E class.. Along with the REGULAR CTS are very mature looking and that's who they tend to appeal to. Only when U get there M, RS, AMG, or V variants does a youthful appearance shine thru. This remedies that even on regular trim.. But alas.  To each his own and we'll see how it fares in the market place. Personally, as I've said dozens of times before, I'm moving up to the CT6 for size and my, ironically, more mature outlook on things automotive

So BMW has announced their CLA competitor, the 2 series Gran Coupe..FWD

    https://jalopnik.com/the-next-bmw-small-sedan-will-be-fwd-just-as-we-feared-1833431079

So then this would say BMW is joining the likes of Toyota, Chevrolet, etc. in whoring out an auto to every Tom, Dick and Harry they can!

FWD is the New Ultimate Driving Machine? ?

GM beat them to this by what 30 years? @balthazar

Problem is/was; the CLA sedan was also in the 3-series / c-class larger compact niche. I think that's why MB shrunk the a-class a bit.

Regardless of market intentions, the initial comment I made was addressing interior vs. exterior dimensions.

The CLA, C-class and SL are all between 182.5 and 184.5 inches long, if you rear seat room is the need then get theC-class.

And all look cheap like any other auto in the same segment.

@ccap41 Come on you know that for the price you pay for these 3 auto's you can get better CPO options out there that look way better.

Korea Cadillac is going great to get people to try out their auto's. Cadillac is giving free rides all over Jeju Island as people go there to swim and enjoy the warmth. Kinda like going to the Florida Keys Islands. Great way to get people into a Cadillac even for a short trip and let them see what the auto is all about.

Those are two different things you just said. Does the entire segment look cheap or is it just not as good as CPO vehicles?

Obviously a CPO luxury vehicle "above" these is going to be better but I don't think anything about a C Class is cheaply made or looks cheap.

Your right I have said two different things, I think for the class, CPO is better than these auto's new IMHO.

I also am not impressed with C Class or any of the others. I just feel that the overall class is a cheap class that if we were not forced to deal with stupid nanny devices and other unneeded items the auto makers could give a superior ride with superior quality materials at that price point.

I see nothing wrong with manual windows or door locks. When we are talking inexpensive auto's I think their is much that could be done better in a base auto than what you get out of this class for the price.

    But that IMHO.

The C-class has air suspension as an option, V6 or V8 as an option and you can get it with or without the driver nanny controls and the materials are the best in that segment and better than a lot of cars in the next segment up.  Not sure what else they could do in that segment.

The C Class is supremely nice even in modest spec form. I drove a mid trim C300 yesterday that really impressed me with the interior design, materials, and fit/finish. Really impressed me.

I was taken aback at how nice the new A Class is. Saw it at the auto show and peeked inside. There was no chance of me squeezing into either the front or the back so I left it at a feel up of the interior bits. The interior dash that looks stupid and cheap in pictures actually looks really good in the flesh. Reader board dashboard screen is actually innovative and will probably spark a trend. Very thin and long  ipad basically.

^ Yea- but that's you; you wake up in the morning to fixate on something for the day. I personally would not have greenlighted the C-Pillar, but it's pretty minor all in all.

On the CT5 :from the above single-angle shot, I'm going to give it a 'no'. It's a bit soft IMO as far as carrying the chiseled look of late- and in softening the edges, it recedes toward the generic. Need to see more outdoors, all angle shots.

The 2020 CT5 measures 193.8 inches (4,924 mm) in length, 74.1 inches (1,883 mm) in width and 57.2 inches (1,452 mm) in height, with a wheelbase of 116.0 inches (2,947 mm).

Despite its Fastback styling, it’s almost as long as a BMW 5-Series, which measures 194.3 inches (4,936 mm) bumper to bumper. Meanwhile, the CT5’s wheelbase is actually longer than that of an Audi A6 (115.1 inches / 2,924 mm). Also, here’s how it compares to a 2019 CTS: 114.6 inches (2,911 mm) wheelbase, 72.2 inches (1,834 mm) width, 195.5 inches (4,966 mm) length – the CT5 is bigger in every way except overall length, but again, that’s because of its styling.

Before you voice your objections in the comments, we asked Cadillac for clarification, and they insisted on describing it as a “compact” premium sedan that will be competitively priced within that segment as well.

Awesome news. 10 inch 1080 screen. NFC.. AND FINALLY.. forced induction only engine line-up! 335HP/400ft-lb of torque is a welcome mid level engine. Same HP as the 540i, but a whopping 68ft-lb torque advantage. I'm betting a much lighter overall car too. Comparable in every way to the 5Series, this new car has a 116 inch-long wheelbase(5series 117.1), has a length of 193.8 inches(5series 194.6) and a width of 74.1 inches(5series 73.5). Yes.. the Caddy is wider.

Interior looks great.. except that damn non-leather steering wheel hub on lower models

Right, I just do not get with all the skin cancer issues and how people love to have their auto's tinted to help deal with hot summer sun, why that is just not standard anymore on a luxury auto.

I agree that once you limo black tint the windows on the side, that ugly weird C pillar issue is gone. The interior blows away anything I have seen on this class from the Germans.

Right.. It's a very small thing. Oh.. And the tint issue is due to statutory laws. Many states will not pass cars in inspection process with tint on.. Unless it is so weak that its barely noticed or a truck/SUV. All of my cars, except the 66, are tinted just over the legal, but due to the interior colors look almost black

Lucky me, PNW does not have inspections so unless your doing something really stupid for the cop to pull you over, tinting is not an issue here. Though I think with the amount of State police cars with limo black tint, that the whole tint thing should just be dropped.

I also have come to think that inspections are good as too many dangerous auto's on the road. Amazing how many people buy and auto and let it fall into disrepair.

The cargo volume thing, 11.9 cubic feet, maybe that is a typo.

The CTS cargo volume is 13.7 cubic feet, this looks like it has a smaller trunk.   Slightly bigger than the ATS, which is 10.4 cubic feet.

There are a lot of vehicles that come with factory tinted rear windows. I would assume that'd be available here as well.. maybe not?

My Escape and Lincoln both came with factory tint behind the driver's row. I can't believe that's a Ford thing.

Don't the GM large SUVs and trucks some with tint on the rear windows in higher trims as well?

While 13.7 isn't huge, 3+ cubic feet more is a good amount difference.

Weird as I have seen the tint on the GM full size Trucks and SUVs and yet also still seen them come with clear glass. Have not figured out why on an Escalade that someone would want clear glass, but I have seen it and it looks bad IMHO.

I agree, I do not think the Tint thing is a Ford thing, just that for some weird reason dealerships order the bulk with tint and then a few without and I see no reason for them being tintless.

My Jeep has factory tint in the same way.  As did my old Jeep. Now in Arizona, you can tint the front side windows also...my sister's Trax has those, but my Jeep (which came from CA) doesn't..not sure about Ohio, but her STS has aftermarket tint on the side windows it looks like.   I think some states don't allow front side window or windshield tinting...

I know on Ford it's a higher trim thing. "Privacy Glass" as they word it.

I think base Lincoln's do as well even though that should be a small part of the luxury experience, imo, and it should be with Cadillac as well.

I don't THINK it is a dealer thing unless they're only ordering lower trims. I think once you step up to a mid or higher trim package it's just something that gets thrown in. Maybe that's part of the selling feature because just looking at two vehicles, one with tint and one without, one looks so much better and most people aren't about going and having their vehicles tinted.

Yeah, i definitely did not think it was a Ford thing.

Here in IL the fronts are only supposed to be 35%. I've done all of mine to 20% and never had issues with law enforcement.

I've looked up the laws and it seems like every state has different laws. Some allow anything, some allow none at all on the fronts and all sorts of mixtures in the middle.

So ATS was convertible sized.. CT5 is sub-subcompact sedan sized.  Basically if you have a family, get a CUV/SUV.

Which is how the market works today...families buy CUVs/SUVs..alas, sedan trunks seem to get smaller and smaller and less useful.

    • Days of cheap autos are over I fear due to incompetent leadership. I think the new era will see all types of autos be in the 35 to 45K range. I do think these are a bit expensive for a subcompact auto, but then if they have all the safety features, they talk about then there is the cost there that would help to justify cost. @Drew Dowdell do you know if the NHTSA requires covers on those front wheels? I seem to see plenty of Jeeps Wranglers that really do not have covers there, so while I found conflicting info from a state standpoint, I have not been able to find any requirements for wheel coverings on the front wheels.
    • I actually dig this from a versatility perspective (obvious nod to the mid-gate like feature) while having such a literal small footprint. That front end will have to be altered due to having absolutely no front end protection before the front wheels. Aside from that, the design actually works. Lots of potential here if they can get the obvious bugs and kinks worked out but a great concept nonetheless.    That price is a little steep too, I might add.
    • How time flies. The S.S. United States made the trip, being towed by tugs down the Atlantic and around the entirety of Florida.  They have pulled it in to Mobile Bay, ahead of schedule. If I find myself in Pensacola in the very near future, I will go over and look at it, if that's possible.  I've never seen it and I've always wanted to. Big kudos for every report I've seen on this:  they just refer to its destination as "the Gulf" ... period.  I noticed that.  I approve.
    • I haven't seen any photos or diagrams of the new Charger internals, but it's the only domestic I can think of that is available in both ICE and EV with the same styling and platform...would be interesting to compare the floor and underside of each  (Some of GM's EVs like the Silverado and Equinox share a name but little else w/ the ICE versions).
    • TELO started in 2023 with a dream, design and build a modern EV truck from the ground up that incorporates electrification and 21st century technology. TELO states that they would build a modern EV truck that had Toyota Tacoma capabilities, Tesla-like range and efficiency, in a footprint of a Mini Cooper. June 13th, 2024, Tela announced a partnership with Aria Group, a leading manufacture to build their first fully functional EV truck called the TELO MT1. TELO Trucks TELO is the brain child of 3 influential men, Founder CEO Jason Marks to the left in the photo, Founder CTO Forrest North center, and Founder CCO Yves Behar right in the photo. A little history to understand the men: Jason Marks - Jason led the Autonomous Vehicles and Driver Assistance Systems test programs at National Instruments (NI), where he was a Chief Business Development Manager. He developed the test systems for five major U.S. automakers' Autonomy and ADAS test systems for their 2024 model year vehicles. He's an experienced Sales, Marketing, and R&D leader with patents in LiDAR. Forrest North - Forrest was on the early Tesla team where he developed the battery pack on the Roadster that's on its way to Mars. He founded Mission Motors, one of the first electric motorcycle companies that broke the land speed record for an electric motorcycle. He founded and sold Plugshare, which was the #1 app for finding charging stations. He's an experienced entrepreneur with over 15 patents in electric vehicle batteries and charging. Yves Behar - Yves founded Fuseproject in 1999, an award-winning, international multidisciplinary design studio. As CEO and Creative Lead, Béhar works with brands like Herman Miller, Samsung, L'Oreal, Puma, SodaStream and Prada and has also co-founded start-ups including August Home, Canopy Space and FORME Life. Béhar's works are included in permanent museum collections worldwide, and he speaks frequently on topics including design, technology and sustainability. In September 2024, TELO hired Automotive Design Luminary Dale Beever as Director of design technical operations. Dale was formerly the President of ICG Inc., Beever has been the creative force behind some of the most iconic vehicles on the road today. He served as the design engineering lead for award-winning efforts in both automotive and aerospace, including Ford Motor Co.’s 50th Anniversary edition Mustang, the Lincoln Continental Concept, the Airstream Nest RV, and the Icon A5 by ICON Aircraft. Beever’s expertise in digital modeling, design engineering, and industrial design—combined with his deep understanding of advanced 3D technologies—enables him to evolve the look and feel of iconic machines while staying true to classic vehicular design. With a top notch assembly of automotive folks to lead the company, TELA built their first simple roll cage version to test their RWD/AWD powertrain. TELO has since expedited to building their minicooper sized five passenger, four door EV pickup with a bed equal to that which comes on a Toyota Tacoma. The TELO MT1 is 152 inches in length, 73 inches wide and 66 inches in height.  Compared to a Toyota Tacoma truck that is 212.3 inches long, 75 inches wide, and 71 inches in height. TELO MT1 also drives home their efficient packaging design by comparing it to a Ford eTransit Connect van that has an overall length of 176 inches, 75 inches wide, and 72 inches in height. TELO motto is "Designed to do more with less" had been a driving goal that has delivered on it in more ways than one. Taking a page from Chevrolet Avalanche, the MT1 comes with a mid-partition or what Chevrolet called a mid-gate. This allows the 60-inch bed to expand to carry a full 4-by8-foot plywood sheet of wood. Yet TELO also allows this to give configuration change that can accommodate up to eight passengers. 2WD will have a 2,000lb payload capacity versus 4WD will have a 1,700lb payload capacity. This all while delivering a 0-60 mph time of 4 seconds, up to 350-mile range and up to 500hp depending on powertrain configuration. The RWD has 300hp and AWD has 500hp. Battery choice is standard with 260 miles of range or long range with 350 miles of range. Wheel size is 215/65 R 16 in a General Grabber A/T tire for ultimate in traction of your lifestyle choice from mountains to beach. TELO MT1 is an innovative approach to modern lifestyle living that allows one to haul just about anything or anyone. From a truck standpoint you have a secure tonneau cover to protect ones belongings, be it work tools during the week to weekend essentials on the go. TELO has picked up some of the best ideas across the auto industry to incorporate it into one of most versatile pickup trucks. The TELO storage tunnel takes what Rivian has done one step farther as mentioned earlier when stated that the midgate could be folded down to be converted into hauling 8 passengers. The storage tunnel becomes the footwell for a third row of seats, converting your truck into an SUV. TELO has taken the motto of "Nothing in Excess" in their approach to the interior. Blending clean, understated patterns with natural fabrics and recycled materials in a TELO approach to minimal, but functional comfort and utility. Official interior images have not been shown yet in their test mules, but their press release images are as follows for digital design. Safety is a key part of the TELO company philosopy. As such, TELO will be incorporating the latest safety technology from sensors to predict and classify collisions before they happen to airbags, and structural technology to make the auto safer for everyone on the road.
