As the Diesel Emits: Volkswagen Accused Of Using Illegal Software In 3.0L TDI V6 (UPDATE)

More Volkswagen TDI Models, These Equipped With the 3.0L TDI V6 Are Found To Emit Nine Times More Emissions Than the Legal Limit

The sh*t is hitting the fan. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB) announced today that Volkswagen had illegal 'defeat device' software installed on a number of their vehicles equipped with the 3.0L TDI V6 to evade diesel emission testing. The two parties say the software allowed the TDI engine to emit nine times the legally allowable pollution limit.

Vehicles involved in this latest allegation include,

    • 2014 Volkswagen Toureg TDI
    • 2015 Porsche Cayenne Diesel
    • 2016 Audi A6 TDI, A7 TDI, A8 TDI, A8L TDI, Q5 TDI

“VW has once again failed its obligation to comply with the law that protects clean air for all Americans. All companies should be playing by the same rules. EPA, with our state and federal partners, will continue to investigate these serious matters, to secure the benefits of the Clean Air Act, ensure a level playing field for responsible businesses, and to ensure consumers get the environmental performance they expect,” said Cynthia Giles, assistant administrator of the Office for EPA’s Enforcement and Compliance Assurance.

UPDATE: Volkswagen has issued a statement on the EPA's announcement.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) informed Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft on Monday that vehicles with V6 TDI engines had a software function which had not been adequately described in the application process. Volkswagen AG wishes to emphasize that no software has been installed in the 3-liter V6 diesel power units to alter emissions characteristics in a forbidden manner.

Volkswagen will cooperate fully with the EPA clarify this matter in its entirety.

EPA's Notice of Violation is below.

Pretty pathetic that Audi and Porsche were doing this also.  Audi and Porsche claim to have such outstanding engineers, you'd think they could have designed an engine that could legally meet emissions requirements in a cost effective way.   Interesting that Audi was pushing diesel as the future, as Mercedes is going to plug-in hybrid, and Mercedes was historically the biggest proponent of diesels.

I hope VW group takes a big hit over all of this.  The one sad thing is diesel engines in general will probably get a real bad reputation, and that is a shame because the diesel technology (done the right way) is pretty good.

This will not stop people using Diesel for trucks and SUVs for hauling weight and trailers. In regards to Diesel cars I expect to see these decline as Hybrid auto's will replace them. VW's lies have led to a world that will turn against diesels I believe.

Even a gasoline engine is been said to have cheat status...an engine that is not available in the U.S...the 1.4 liter 4 cylinder...

    OMG...

And Porsche just announced that it voluntarily will cease to sell the diesel Cayenne.

Over at Audi...its business as usual...for now.

Still early as the more they dig into this the more products will be halted till they are corrected. I expect this to end up costing the VW empire double the 6.7 billion they set aside and could go even higher by the time legal fines are done.

    • Those that cannot accept a multi-cultural world and immigration deserve to lose everything. I will stay professional, but believe that our North American Economy is about to get far worse over the long term than it is now. It is amazing how people do not seem to realize that the first two years of a new president is dealing with the ramifications of the last president. The high inflation was due to the failed policies of those before. We now have low unemployment and a strong economy. Will be interesting to see how it ends.
    • I say, let it get worse.  The people have spoken and this is what the MAJORITY voted for.  He even got the popular vote.  Therefore the people of America have spoken.   This is what they want.  This is what they feel comfortable with.   But I dont want to hear ANY whining from ANYBODY about what possibly may happen with him Him in power.  Fool me once,  shame on you!  Fool me twice, shame on me?   Technically this is how that saying goes.  But you never know. Maybe it really IS the lefty libtards that are the problem.   Hopefully it IS the lefty libtards that are the problem and the Messiah Trump will BE the solution to ALL of our problems.   I will be the first one to apologize if He actually does fix America's and Canada's problems.  And unite ALL of the world and the world gets to sing Kumbaya ALL in unison. Hopefully He is the next coming of Christ.   Keeping my fingers crossed but I aint holding my breath if you know what I mean.
    • @oldshurst442 This pretty much sums up just how bad it is going to get. Trump's economic plans would worsen inflation, experts say | AP News
    • Not just iPhones... He tariffed Canadian wood the first time around as Pres and the prices of wood skyrocketed so American home builders bought American wood which was and is more expensive than Canadian wood.  I guess that is good for American wood producers. But for the fact that house prices also skyrocketed.  And considering that Canada and US have a more or less good trading thing going on...so not that good.  Not for the US and not good for Canada.  But Donald thinks otherwise. And all the folk that voted for him this time around think that the economy will get better?  I hope so for their sake. But Elon and Jeff B's billions rose quite a bit upon the announcement of his re-election.  I wonder if those  people that voted for him, I wonder if their wealth also rose instantly?    You poor bastards... You have no idea what is coming to you... (those that voted for him.  With the excemption of the rich of course)     Donnie Rides Again
