As the Diesel Emits: Federal Judge Gives Volkswagen A Deadline To Figure Out A Fix

It has been six months, where is the fix Volkswagen?!

It has been almost six months since Volkswagen admitted to using illegal software on their diesel vehicles to fool emission tests. Since then, a lot of people have been waiting for a fix to make the vehicles legal. Now a federal judge has given Volkswagen a deadline to come up with a solution.

Reuters reports that at hearing yesterday, U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco has given the German automaker till March 24th to give a definitive answer on the status of a fix.

"Six months is long enough" to determine if this is a fixable problem, Breyer said.

    "This is an ongoing problem."

Back in January, Volkswagen presented a possible solution to the EPA and California Air Resources Board (CARB). But CARB rejected the plan as it was "incomplete, substantially deficient and fall far short of meeting the legal requirements to return these vehicles” to compliance. Since then, Volkswagen has been talking with the EPA, CARB, and the U.S. Justice Department about a new solution.

Robert Giuffra, a lawyer representing Volkswagen told the Judge Breyer the company is making progress with the various parties. Giuffra couldn't go into specifics as the Justice Department has asked Volkswagen not to speak about the negoations.

"We are committed to resolving these matters as quickly as possible," said Giuffra.

My gut is telling me that VW will be buying back and crushing the half million illegal diesels in this country. I cannot see their lack of details fix becoming reality. One if memory serves me correct there is the 325,000 that are sold with NO EMISSIONS cleaning and so a whole new emissions system is a fail from the start. The rest of the auto's if they cannot supply a clear patch to fix it, then they might as well just buy them and crush them as well.

This is really what I've been expecting all along. There's a reason every legal diesel sold in the US has a urea injection system. I don't see how they can retrofit a solution.

Interesting wonder if any of the auto's will not be sold back or fixed but held by people looking to have a rare collectible. This covered what 5 to 7 years of auto's or some crazy range, but that is a number of versions that will just go away. Course I never thought of VW auto's as collectible so this could be a mute point.

Still interesting to think of years of auto versions being taken off the road, crushed and then auto fans have a void between legal to current legal auto's.

I forget the exact totals, but I believe the earlier ones just have a particulate filter (2009 to 2012/13). The newer ones do have a urea system.

I doubt the cars will hold enough value for the owners to overlook a buyback. Once the legal case is closed, these cars will be permanently red-flagged for road use after the next emissions test.

    • If you are in a hotel and there is a (laptop) safe in the room, you'd probably use it for your laptop if leaving the room and/or hotel for a while. If you are in a hotel without one, what do you do (with your laptop)?  I often have them pass on room service ... that's for sure.  It would be beneficial for some of you to weigh in.
    • Random thoughts: Saw many German imports sporting medium enamel grey exteriors with darker red leather interiors in affluent desert communities and this combination looks nice. Was following a recent Dodge Challenger on the freeway tonight and I love that rear light bar, so I think it's the best looking of the 3 pony car rehashes. Saw an immaculate black 2007 or 2008 Cadillac DTS on the freeway tonight and they still look good, even timeless. I happened onto a dog video last night and it had "Dog Whisperer" Cesar Millan in it.  I read about him and he once ran a "Dog Psychology Center."  Ha. He does not have a degree in psychology, animal husbandry, or anything.  Then, L.A. douchebag groupthink shines through.  The list of celebs who used him (one refers or copies another celeb) is lengthy.  Remember when celebs were snapping up Priuses, almost as if to make a statement? About 40% of my music collection consists of African-American artists. I  notice this as I surf Bluetooth. Some of my friends joke that I was Black in a previous life.  Come on.  Some white artists - even hard rockers - are more starched than many Black artists ... smooth, earthy, sassy, passionate, gravelly, and/or powerful ... that's what I like in music and they put out some great musical tracks.   Happy Friday.

The only think I would do differently is dice up the garlic and onions more, so they blend into the pasta better and use a variety of cheeses, like Mozzarella and Smokey Gouda plus the parmesan. • I love BBQing, but with my Knee recovery, I am not up to being outside in my BBQ area and cooking ribs the right way slow and steady for a fall off the bone rib. I have been looking online at other options and yes, I love Dr. Pepper way more than Coke or Pepsi, in fact I cannot think of the last time I had a coke or pepsi.  Dr. Pepper slow cooked ribs, then finished in the oven. Seems like a good Idea to try. What do you guys think? Slow Cooker Dr. Pepper BBQ Ribs - Only 3 Ingredients!
