Rumorpile: Mercedes-Benz's Range Topping S-Class To Be Named Maybach?

      Maybach Making A Comeback?

See if you can follow this logic: Mercedes-Benz creates an ultra-luxury brand called Maybach to compete with the likes of Rolls-Royce and Bentley. The company really doesn't do much with the brand aside from introducing a number of special editions, showing off the Exelero concept, and having Jay-Z and Kayne West cut one up in a music in a music video. After ten years, Mercedes decides to kill of the brand due to lackluster sales. In its place will be a super S-Class wearing the Maybach nameplate?! According to Autoweek, this could happen.

The new super S-Class could be wearing the Maybach nameplate when it is shown sometime this year. The model will be stretched out a foot and feature such amenities like reclining rear seats and folding tables.

Still, bringing back a nameplate that failed... is that a good idea? Why not use something like Pullman or Grosser? We'll be keeping an eye on this.

Interesting, I would have to think this will be a Trim package on the S-Class. They need to recover the R&D on those expensive recliner chairs for the back seat. ;)

:P I am sure the private limo business will continue to buy them.

I think Pullman or Grosser is a better name. S600 Maybach sounds dumb, S600 Grosser makes more sense since they already made a 600 Grosser in the past, and that car was pretty much the ultimate in everything in its time.

The name 'Maybach' seems to have resonance with some segments of the target market, though--hip hop moguls and high-end drug dealers.

S600 Maybach might not blow up many skirts here, but compared to being a Grosser which sounds like a kids cartoon with vomit type jokes or Pullman which tends to make me think of trains, I think it is a better marketing potential than either of the other two. I still think that while there is potential for a stretched version of the S600 with ultimate interior, I am not sold on Maybach being the right top of the line package name.

...600 Grosser in the past, and that car was pretty much the ultimate in everything in its time.

    LOL.

This is marketing fallacy : naming a successful flagship after a just-shuttered failure of a brand.

No one remembers either 'pullman' or 'grosser', so there's no cache' there, but dfelt is right; the latter is juvenile-sounding name.

Daimler should just tack another alpha-numeric on it - that seems to resonate well with the typical MB buyer.

Better yet; skip the marketing millions and just make the s-class better by having whatever left-over features from the maybach under the option list of the S. It needs a shot in the arm anymore.
