Detroit Auto Show Reveal: 2016 Nissan Titan XD

Nissan hopes to jump back into the fray with the 2016 Nissan Titan XD.

At the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Nissan revealed the 2016 Nissan Titan XD. Nissan has been trailing in the full-size pickup truck segment for a number of years and hope to change that with the new Titan.

Easily the biggest news on the Titan is the new 5.0 liter turbo-charged V8 Diesel. This makes the Titan the only truck in the half-ton market with a diesel V8. The new 5.0 diesel is supplied by Cummins and produces 310 horsepower and a stump ripping 555 lb-ft. This gives the Titan towing and hauling abilities closer to those in a heavy duty pickup but in the size and price class of the light duty pickups. When appropriately equipped, the Titan can tow up to 12,000 lbs. For those with a gooseneck trailer, the Titan comes with an available integrated gooseneck hitch integrated into the frame.

Displayed at the show is the Titan XD Crewcab. Closer to launch there will be two more cab configuration and one more frame size.

More details will be made available from Nissan in future.

2016 NISSAN TITAN XD MAKES WORLD DEBUT AT NORTH

    AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW

    • Nissan President and CEO Carlos Ghosn unveils 2016 TITAN XD, marking Nissan’s

aggressive return to the full-size pickup battlefield

    • All-new TITAN XD design, anchored by powerful Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel,

carves out “new class” of full-size truck between current heavy-duty and light-duty

    offerings

    • Bold TITAN XD exterior and interior designs follow “powerful precision tool” theme –

topped with new Warrior-inspired TITAN badging

    • Created for American buyers – with core planning, design and engineering

conducted in Tennessee, California, Michigan and Arizona – new Nissan TITAN will

be assembled in Mississippi, with engines from Tennessee and Indiana

DETROIT (Jan. 12, 2015) – Nissan today debuted the all-new Nissan TITAN full-size

pickup to a standing room-only crowd of international media at the 2015 North American

International Auto Show. Presiding over the dramatic reveal was Nissan President and

Chief Executive Officer Carlos Ghosn, who stated, “With the 2016 Nissan TITAN XD, we

weren’t just going for ‘best-in-class.’ Instead, we are offering the ‘Best New Class.’”

The new TITAN XD, the first of the new generation of Nissan TITAN models, creates a new

segment of the American market. It offers the effortless towing and hauling of the larger,

more expensive heavy-duty trucks – yet has the fuel-efficiency and affordability of half-ton

pickups. It is projected to go on sale at Nissan dealers nationwide in late 2015.

Powered by a new Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel rated at 310 horsepower and hefty 555

lb-ft of torque, the 2016 TITAN XD will offer an available maximum towing capacity of

more than 12,000 pounds (when properly equipped), along with available cutting-edge

towing features such as an integrated gooseneck hitch engineered into the frame.

Additional available TITAN XD utility features and convenience aids include RearView

Monitor with Trailer Guides, Around View® Monitor (AVM) with Moving Object Detection

(MOD) and a Trailer Light Check system that allows one-person hook-up operation –

including checking turn signals, brake lights and running/clearance lights from outside the

vehicle. Also available are Blind Spot Warning (BSW) and a Front and Rear Sonar System.

The wide range of available interior features includes front and rear NASA-inspired Zero

Gravity seats and a large center console designed to serve as a mobile workstation.

“The new TITAN will deliver toughness, capability and quality,” added Ghosn. “In addition

to a range of cab configurations, the TITAN lineup will ultimately encompass multiple

powertrain choices. These include an all-new workhorse gasoline V8, as well as our first V6

    offering in this class.” 2

More details on the full Nissan TITAN lineup will be announced at a later date.

The all-new TITAN, like the first-generation Titan, was developed with core Nissan

planning, design, engineering and manufacturing teams contributing from Tennessee,

    California, Michigan, Arizona and Mississippi.

The all-new TITAN also underscores Nissan’s commitment to localized production. Nissan

has invested more than $5 billion in the United States in the past five years and has moved

manufacturing for several models from overseas to its North American plants.

“Our growing U.S. presence is bolstering our performance and helped to make 2014 a year

of significant growth for Nissan in the U.S.,” said Ghosn. “Our operations, our network of

partners, and – most importantly – our products are stronger than ever. Nissan is targeting

10 percent market share in the U.S. And the all-new TITAN is a key part of our growth

    strategy.”

The new TITAN XD Crew Cab is the first of three cab configurations, two frame sizes, three

powertrain offerings and five grade levels to be available later in the Nissan TITAN lineup.

More information on the full lineup will be available at a later date.

Of course the Ram has a light-duty diesel (V6), tho it's power number are obviously lower with the lower CI.
240 HP / 420 TRQ / 9200 lbs towing is still pretty good.

If I needed more, I'd rather get a Ram 2500 diesel, 800 TRQ than a Titan, then I could tow 18000 and have the chassis/components engineered specifically for it.

I don't think I'd be comfortable hauling HD-loads with a 1/2-ton truck frame underneath, no matter how nissan 'certifies' it. I mean; its Nissan, after all.

You'll spend another $10k - $15k to do so though. That's what Nissan is targeting here. Almost HD loads and diesel torque to do it.  It is a middle ground that no one else covers at the moment.

I can see that as a business case, tho undoubtedly it's a very temporary situation. I don't see nissan gaining any share here; trucks in general are expensive enough & sell in such large numbers because the work truck segment is not that cash strapped, IMO.

Also, IMO you'd see a tangible return all along the life on that 10-15K with a Ram 2500.

EDIT :: Looked into this. The '15 nissan Pro-X CC starts at $40.2K. You can get a Ram 2500 CC SLT starting at $41.9K. Diesel I6 is an $8200 option, but we don't yet kno where nissan is going to tag the V8 diesel… so there looks like potentially, maybe a $5K savings… or none, yet you still get a half-ton truck vs. a 3/4-tonner (with a MUCH higher towing capacity : 11000 vs 18000). No contest; nissan falls short yet again.

Wow, that is one ugly truck. I agree entirely with the chinese-knockoff look commented above. It's like an F-150 that's been microwaved and subsequently melted as a result. And those fender vents; What were they thinking? Cheapens the design even further. The interior is damn near an exact copy of the the F-150's. This just doesn't feel like a serious production vehicle from a major automaker. Now, had this been a Geely...

I'm biased, and I definitely see some F-150 influence, but I think it's a pretty handsome vehicle.  Plus, the "non-XD" should look a little different.  Also, I don't see anything about the interior that screams F-150 or GM.  It looks pretty much like any other Nissan dash.  If anything I see Ram in the cab area, but that could be carry-over design from when it was supposed to be based on the Ram 1500.  Regardless, I don't think Nissan expects to suddenly be outselling the F-series...

Just OUT THERE, so weird, and a mix of so many other trucks... it's like Ford and Dodge are brother and sister, and had a baby together... INBRED.  Bleh to the Nth degree.

Ugly outside, looks like an old F150 with Japanese styling cues. The interior looks fine, it is what you'd expect. Cummings diesel is nice, they got the engine right, but they got the body wrong.

    • To quote: Audi CEO Gernot Döllner: “Highly emotive reinterpretation of quattro” This pretty much states the drive by Audi to offer a showcase EV that covers the potential of the PPE platform. Audi developed portal axles that enable gradient climbs of up to 100% with a wider track, increased ride height that delivers on a spectacular appearance that no other EV has delivered today. The Audi Q6 Offroad features a two-motor AWD Quattro powertrain that delivers 380 kW or 510 HP. A progressive off-road stance that increases the ride height by 160mm or 6.3 inches and a wider track of 250mm or 9.8 inches over current Audi width. The new portal axles allow an increase in torque by 50 percent, enabling the Q6 Offroad to climb a 45-degree gradient with no problems. The Q6 Off-road is built off the Audi Q6 e-tron, the first model built on the PPE or Premium Platform Electric system. It is the new reference point for electrically driven Vorsprung durch Technik. The Audi Q6 model series not only excels with impressive driving and charging performance but also sets standards in range and efficiency per their press release. The Q6 e-tron offroad concept can be seen in action on February 1, 2025, at the F.A.T. Ice Race and on the social media channels of @Audi Sport. The interior is currently what is found in the Q6 e-tron. Since this is based on an existing production version EV, the Q6 Offroad could easily be put into production based on feedback from various events where Audi is going to show this off and gather attendees' response. What do you think, should this go into production? View full article
