  1. It's more than just the drivers though - every time you buy groceries you are indirectly using the roads. Let's not entirely punish the farmer for that.
  2. Gas taxes trickle down and have price effects on anything shipped by truck. If you introduce a gas tax, food prices will go up. Clothing prices will go up. Etc, etc, etc... The gas tax difference is the main reason why the basic cost of living is lower in the US than it is in Canada. I've been noticing less and less California produce as the gas prices go up, there's more local Ontario food being sold in supermarkets here. That's part of the effect the gas tax has as well. Expect California farmers to get hit pretty hard by this, as they depend strongly on exports from their state.
  3. From an email I got... "A recent study found that the average American walks about 900 miles a year. Another study found that Americans drink, on average, 22 gallons of alcohol a year. That means that, on average, Americans get about 41 miles to the gallon!"
  4. I hope your brother recovers. I also hope you stress to him and your parents that this is why we have seatbelts!!!
  5. My and my girlfriend went to Manhattan in mid-Sept. for a weekend. Was a great trip, except for the half hour we spent lost in Newark. What a craphole town that is.
  6. Shock / strut wear? Check.... Not sure whether to blame this on the Cobalt or just the roughness of Ontario roads in the past 2 years - but I've had to replace shocks and a control arm mount already. On the other hand I've still got the original brake pads, which have yet to hit the screech strip at 122,000 km.
  7. Sure, there are definately drawbacks to a 2 party system, but then check out Canada. We have basically a 4-party system. We had an election yesterday, and we elected another minority government, meaning that no party got 50% - laws are difficult to pass and bi- or tri-partisanism is required for EVERYTHING. It also means another election (which costs the country millions) is probably no more than 2 years away as a minority parliament is very dysfunctional. So there are problems with our system too.
  8. ...but Ocn, isn't being anti-gay rights a real traditional Republican viewpoint? I realize Sarah Palin is not anti-gay rights (not sure about McCain) but aren't Republicans traditionally the "one man, one woman" crowd? I'm not trying to stir up crap here, remember I am Canadian and while I understand American politics I don't see it first hand all the time like all you Americans, so pardon me if this question is stupid.
  9. On Mythbusters they once ran an '80s carbeurated Olds by pumping hydrogen directly in the intake - no real mods required, just remove the fuel line and carbeurator and apply hydrogen hose to hole. ps. Yes, it was dangerous.
  10. Holy crap, I've never heard of anyone actually using that many messages - I thought the 50-100 my friend sends a month was a lot.
  11. I've had a girlfriend for 6 months now, it's going really well. Went to NYC together just last month to celebrate. Plus my job has been going very well too... Positive enough?
  12. You misunderestimate the average voter - those things DO matter to her candidacy for most people!
  13. Somebody has a vivid imagination.
  14. Ewwww easy cleanup brings images of somebody needing to use a hose. *pukes* ps. I've known another Dodge Shadow owner who got laid in it... but that's because she's female. As my friend so eloquently put it, "All women have to do to get laid is not say No!"
  15. Nickelback - it's even worse as a Canadian, local content gets played more here) Mariah Carey - screeeeeeeeech Pop Rap* - The stuff made specifically for clubs. I like GOOD hip-hop: k-os, The Roots, Mos Def, etc. Country Overproduced pop * If I have to hear "Air" pronounced as "Ayyy-errrr" one more time I'm going to shoot someone.
  16. If somebody is rigging this poll, they're doing it all over the world (or they're a good hacker or the CIA and are faking their IP). Look at all the places below where those extra RP votes are coming from. AUSTRALIA Votes for: 1288 votes for Ron Paul 726 votes for Barack Obama ... 17. I've worked with OPG long enough to learn a few things about the power generation and distribution systems. From idea to completion, power plants in general and especially nuclear plants take a lot longer to build than extra transmission lines. The timeline (idea to completion) for the nuclear plant will be about 15-18 years, while the transmission lines take about 5.
  18. This product was originally made to appease the Canadian Pontiac dealers, who historically have had lower end product available (see the Tempest). While this is a good move for Canada (this car has been available for about 3-4 years in Canada already) it's not good in the US where Pontiac has a different image. Bringing the Tempest over wouldn't have been a good idea either. Somebody is taking the idea of globalizing the brands and taking it one step too far.
  19. It's a shame that they couldn't at least mock up something that looks like the Volt for the commercial - I mean, this isn't just an Ontario Power Generation ad, it's actually GM Canada contributing as well. Still, it must be nice for GM to see electricity providers willing to start an ad campaign which benefits their product.
  20. OPG plug-in car site featuring the Volt Got a heads-up email about this today as a contractor for Ontario Power Generation. Seems like maybe somebody else was listening to me rant these past few years about early adoption of plug in cars fuelling increased electricity production. Alright, maybe not... but it's at least nice to see other people think these things as well. Notice that the video shows Malibus as the stand-in for Volts, I guess they're hoping people won't catch that? ...or implying that the Malibu may be plug-in in the future?
  21. What a stupid picture. Bob, have some class. You're the CEO, fer fecks sake.
  22. I think this is an apt time to quote 68. If you're not mad, you're not paying attention. There are protests starting on the streets here in Toronto. Big oil is really pushing it, they better not piss of the general public seeing how all their facilities are extremely flammable.
