Luckily for me, I know enough about the engine that even if I can't work on it myself, I know what questions to ask of any would-be mechanic. I did own one a while back.... and I probably will again.

I am another one of those guys. I actually like that engine. And it was a 215hp DOHC V6 in a time where V6s were hot if they even got close to 200hp. Some of it's contemporaries: Ford Mustang - 4.9 litre 215hp V8 BMW 5-series - 3.0 litre 215hp V8 Toyota Avalon - 3.0 litre 192hp V6 Ford Taurus SHO - 3.0 litre 220hp V6 - and this is where I get to point out to SHO fans that while the Cutlass supreme coupe has 5 less HP, it also weighs 200lbs less.

and if you don't? Tell her, "If I had to sell the SKY, you can deal with a gently used CPO car"

Technically, with the exception of hearse and livery service, the 8-6-4 and 4100 were never sold at the same time.

There was a 4.3 litre V6 diesel, transverse mounted in the A-bodies if I recall. Apparently they got amazing gas mileage but didn't suffer the same problems the 350d had. They just suffered from it's reputation.

my mistake, I thought it ended in '86 and became the 4.5 in '87. Two years longer than four too many.

I'll get the easy ones out of the way first. 8-6-4 ShortStar DOHC 3.2 V6 <Cadillac CTS> 4100 - "ran" for 4 years... not short enough in my opinion

I've never seen under the hood of a Trailblazer is the I6 slant mounted like BMWs are? If not, couldn't modifying the engine to be a slant block install help out a lot with packaging?

Why not? The original 3.2 in the CTS was a 2 1/2 year only engine. It was replaced by the 2.8HF. If there ever was an example of a DOHC V6 being less refined than a pushrod V6.... the 3.2 would be it. It sounded awful, had a rough idle due to it's oddball 54 degree cylinder bank <I always describe it as a "limp">, used timing belts, wasn't particularly powerful for it's size and is the main cause for the poor rating for the CTS in CR in it's first year.... and thusly CR ignoring the substantially superior and better selling 3.6HF in subsequent years and continuing to base the CTS's rating on just the 3.2. Strangely it was based on the 3.0 available in the final years of the Saturn LS.... which, while not being a barn burner, was completely the opposite in terms of running mannerisms when compared to the 3.2. Additionally, the 3.0 had comparable power to the pushrod 3.4 and could have been directly swapped in and silenced all the whining about pushrods in the Minivans, N-bodies, W-bodies, etc. Sorry for the oddball GM DOHC V6 history lesson.

Could be. I had Yokohama Avid Touring or Dunlop WinterSports on it. I didn't mind the 16s on my car because it was black. I don't think I could have gotten away with it in any other color.

No, I didn't have that package. I had 16s on mine. Cheaper for switching back and forth between snow tires/summer tires twice a year.... and I'm not a wheel size queen. I had craptastic Goodyears
