  1. I can see your concern if it was GPS based, but here in washington I have volunteered to test out the tax per mile and all it is is them reading your computer for the miles recorded driven, that gives them nothing of where you have gone or done. I see nothing wrong with a Tax per mile and each year your odometer is read.
  2. I can totally believe this, MB wanted a fortune for their Pee solution and VW balked and as such we have VWgate.
  3. So then should it be broken down by weight class. Amazing is the listing of State weight fees. For auto's depending on state, they are no extra fees up to 4000 to 8000lbs, after that, depending on if it is a regular auto or class C they have various fees up to 300,000lbs in some cases. Most states seem to top out between 40,000 and 80,000. http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/ohim/hwytaxes/2001/pt11.htm In thinking about this, I would agree an Auto regardless of class over 6000lbs does put more wear on the roads than under that. 0-6000 lbs 6000 - 12,000 lbs 12,001 - 40,000 lbs 40,001 - above lbs. I can see this as a fare weight class with no added fees for the first class, 1/3 of a cent for the second, 2/3rds of a cent for the third class and a full 1 cent added cost to the fourth and final weight class.
  4. Very True, I put myself through College while working full time and very little help from my parents. Amounted to living at home rent free and eating dinner with them when I could. I put my two kids and wife through college and am paying it off, just a few more years left. I will agree with Drew, College has become a profit center which favors the rich and screws the rest unless your a minority and can get them to pay it all for you. Sadly, being white and making too just enough money over their so called income line kept me from being able to take advantage of any perks to reduce the cost of college. 12 years straight and two kids and wife all with Bachelor degrees and eventually I will come out ahead but tough doing. Over all I stand by my statement of Minimum wage is very much needed for teens. That should NOT be a living wage. BACK ON TOPIC What do people think of the Tax Per mile? ?????????????
  5. EV Tax - Back on topic, but I truly think a tax per mile is the best way to go even over a kWh used counter thing. EV's just like any alternative fuel auto needs to pay it's fair share for road use. Tax per mile is a very fair way to go. Example is the Fed rate of 18.4 cents per gallon at an average of 25 miles per gallon for auto's with 12,000 miles driven per year equals = ???? 12,000 / 25 = 480 gallons of gas. 480 gallons x .184 = $88.32 tax dollars paid by a Petro driving owners to the feds each year. Diesel is 24.4 cents per gallon. http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/PowerSearch.do?action=noform&year1=2014&year2=2015&vfuel=Diesel&mclass=Pickup+Trucks, Sport+Utility+Vehicles, Vans, Minivans&srchtyp=newDslTrks Based on the gov figures which does not show diesel being that much better than gas. Yes VW TDI Fans I know you love your 50+ MPG auto's, but based on the Gov auto figures your looking at 27 MPG on average. Diesel Owners on the same formula: 12,000 / 27 = 444 gallons of Diesel 444 x .244 = 108.44 tax dollars paid by a Diesel driving owner to the feds each year. So why an equal amount to EV's. Using the Amount paid by Petro above, $88.32 / 12,000 = $.0074 cents per mile. So Road Tax per mile makes the best sense to me. You have your auto checked at the time you renew your license and the miles driven is how much you have to pay the feds for Road tax. My senior parents who barely drive 4000 miles would pay $29.60 a Year to the feds for Road tax. Myself who drives about 15,000 miles would pay $111.00 This would then work out just like a gas tax, states would add on their own miles tax and collect and pay the portion to the feds and keep their own portion. Tax per mile, The best solution for all!
  6. Not sure what it is about this car but I also get it from the Camero, but Meh! Maybe it is my age and place in my life that these just do not do anything much for me any longer.
  7. Minimum wage is needed but not as a so called Living Wage. Nice that Roosevelt made those comments during the Great Depression. Yet all you have to do is look at countries that have tried to push a living wage such as Spain, Greece, and so many others and the very high unemployment rate among young people. Minimum wage was about giving young people and people with no skills a chance to prove themselves, gain some trade skills and move up. Most companies use minimum wage as a chance for others to prove themselves and when the Gov raises the minimum wage, you then end up with INFLATION! I see nothing wrong with a $7.50 per hr minimum wage to start and prove your self. After all kids need jobs too and most are not in need of supporting themselves as they live at home.
  8. Ugh, I can only imagen how ugly those subcompact Predator mouth auto's would be. Yea all auto companies can say they have holes, but do they really need to spend the money to develop a couple auto's that would cover 70K a year in additional production capacity? Maybe, Maybe not.
  9. Good Catch, was an Escort. Yes very true, I had a medical emergency in 1990 and had bleed terribly. After surviving, I was only 195 lbs, toothpick skinny when I went car shopping. Good thing I could not afford the Reatta as by 1992 I was bulking back up fast and my wife ended up driving the Escort as I bought a Jeep Wrangler Sahara edition which was traded in for my 1994 GMC Suberban SLE model.
  10. I have two that I would put into this bucket. Buick Reatta, Loved the design, but was too pricy for me at the time and the interior just came off as cheap. 1991 Chevy Berretta GTZ with Quad 4 engine and 5 speed stick. This one I was very serious about and it lost out to my 1991 Ford Escort GT which was clearly a much better built auto. Chevy had the right idea here but totally screwed up the execution and quality.
  11. Interesting, should be a nice sleeper since they have never built anything that can excite me let alone the bigger market. They are a company that is way to conservative to actually build an exciting EV. If they do, then they might have found someone that can lead the company and actually build excitement. Gonna be interesting to watch.
  12. H'mmmm I wonder who will be the first to announce manufacturing in this country when the political peeps realize they need to have it there for the blue color work force. Gonna be interesting for sure.
  13. Yawn, they have been there and done that, Guess here is hoping the 3rd time is the charm.
  14. Just read this about Union Pacific and how their new Locomotives with 80% less Nitrous Oxides and 90% less Particles being emitted by these new engines. GREEN LOCOMOTIVES http://www.uprr.com/newsinfo/releases/environment/2007/0522_iden.shtml
  15. What Drew says is so true, we had a bridge that was built back in 1938, collapsed when a semi went over it. They are now finally building a new one and the traffic is diverted through a small town 20 miles out of the way. The people hurt and damage could have been avoided if they had just replaced the infrastructure in a reasonable period of time rather than kick the can down the road. Sorry but free medical and school to illegals comes behind taking care of this country, future workers of America and the infrastructure to support our citizens. As I have stated, road tax per mile for everyone is the best fair way to go.
  16. I agree, this is like what has come under fire in Washington state with new lotteries that are supposed to go to the schools and taxes on alternative energy for auto's and yet both go into a general fund and are wasted on other pet social services not all being good.
  17. These are freakin lovely!
  18. Excited for Nikola Semi's to hit the road and push Kenworth, Peterbuilt, Mac and others into a much cleaner phase of Trucking. Time to remove the smell and particle dirt from the roads and cities.
  19. While I think it sucks that they are truly penalizing the EV over gas. I think the best thing is to go to a mileage tax to be fair to everyone. Even with this $150 a year charge, I still think EV owners will have much lower costs compared to gas. Washington state has the same yearly registration fee for all auto's. Base is $80 and goes up depending on weight of the auto. Example is an HD F650 pickup is $384 a year to register here. So Chevy Bolt is $80 yearly to register, then at $24 a month to charge, your looking at $288 a year for 14,400 miles driven. Year cost to drive the BOLT = $368 My Trailblazer is $165 a year to register, $400 a month average for gas. $80 twice a year for synthetic oil changes. Yearly cost $5,125 Love my TB and will keep it, but excited about owning a BOLT!
  20. Cool, I can see this product line being Hybrid and EV only in the near future. Torque of the electric motor will greatly help to move that weight around.
  21. Very cool to see the details of where the green house gas comes from here in North America. https://www.epa.gov/ghgemissions/sources-greenhouse-gas-emissions Better yet is that the EPA has in place emission standards for trans along with exhaust treatment system much like the Diesel trucks do with the Urea system according to this site. https://www.dieselnet.com/standards/us/loco.php Had no Idea the Locomotives had changed so much in the last 17 years or so. Gotten very clean with Diesel treated generators producing the electricity for the electric motors that push all the freight around this country. The EPA one seems to point to Long Haul trucking / all Commercial Trucking and Shipping as the last big area to pull into cleaner emissions.
  22. That is a sweet looking car, decent price for such low miles.
  23. In Washington State $24 dollars buys you equal to 1200 miles in the Chevy Bolt.
