When it comes to designing a vehicle, comprises must be made. If you want a vehicle to have a sharp profile, that means giving up a bit of interior space and glass area for example. The upcoming Chevrolet Bolt EV is no exception to this. Automotive News reports that designers tasked with designing the production Bolt gave up some aerodynamic efficiency to improve overall interior space. The Bolt has a drag coefficient of 0.32, while the new Toyota Prius has a drag coefficient of 0.24. “It’s a disaster for aero,” said Stuart Norris, lead designer on the Bolt. To compensate for the poor aerodynamics, Norris and his team at GM's South Korea design studio by employing underbody paneling, spoiler, active grille shutters, and even adjusting the size of the A-pillar. Six full-size iterations of various Bolt designs went into the wind tunnel to figure out which tweaks worked. Source: Automotive News (Subscription Required)

China is an expensive place to buy a foreign car thanks to tariffs on imports. This is why many automakers outside of China set up joint-ventures with Chinese ones to avoid them. Porsche is trying another way to make their vehicles less expensive by offering less power. Automotive News Europe reports that the German sports car builder will be offering a 250 horsepower version of the 718 Boxster and Cayman for 600,000 Yuan (about $90,000 at the time of this writing). The 600,000 price tag is "a magical threshold for customers in China," according to Jan Roth, head of the Porsche 718 line. "A lot of the TTs that Audi sells in China, the smaller displacement 1.8-liter versions with rear wheel instead of all-wheel-drive, are priced below that, Mercedes too," (Author's note: The base Audi TT is front-wheel drive and not rear-wheel drive. We're guessing this was missed in editing or lost in translation. -WM) Roth says this new variant could nearly double sales of the 718 Boxster and Cayman in China - 2,500 in 2015 to 4,500 in 2017. The Mazda CX-5 is now the oldest crossover in their lineup. But Mazda has some big plans for the next-generation model. A spy photographer caught a CX-5 mule filling up at a California gas station. The mule was heavily camouflaged, but we're able to pull some key details about the design. The first is that the CX-5 will be taking some design ideas from the larger CX-9. For example, the front end features narrower headlights and a more pronounced grille surround. The back of the roof also appears to have a sharper slant. We wouldn't be surprised if Mazda brings some premium materials and design to the CX-5's interior, along with more advanced driver assistance systems. One item up in the air is what will power the CX-5? Will they carry over the 2.0 and 2.5L four-cylinder engines? We would expect front-wheel and all-wheel drive to be on offer. Mazda could show the next-generation CX-5 later this year at the LA Auto Show/ Source: Left Lane News, Motor1.com View full article

What is the best way to sell a vehicle? Is it through a dealership or a factory store? For Karma Automotive - the reincarnation of Fisker - plans to do both. Automotive News reports that by the end of this year, 10 franchised dealerships in key markets around the U.S. and Canada will begin selling the Revero. The dealers picked already sell brands like Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini, and Porsche. "These guys really understand this customer. They get that it's not moving metal and pushing volume like the mass-market guys have to," said Jim Taylor, Karma's chief marketing officer. Alongside the dealers, Karma will have a few brand experience centers" (aka factory stores) in states allow this type of retail experience. Taylor said the stores would allow Karma to control its brand message, and provide reassurance to the dealers that "it's living up to the same standards it expects of them." "When you control your own store, you live it every day, so you have to walk the walk, So I think in a good way it puts a lot of pressure on yourself to deliver the same level of performance," said Taylor. Karma plans on showing the Revero next month. Source: Automotive News (Subscription Required) View full article

Take this story with a fair amount of salt as the outlet who broke this story doesn't say where it got this information. According to a report from German newspaper Bild am Sonntag, U.S. authorities have uncovered three more pieces of illegal software in the 3.0L TDI V6 used on the Volkswagen Touareg, Audi Q7, and Porsche Cayenne. The various pieces of software can turn off the emissions control systems after 22 minutes of driving. This would allow a vehicle to pass an emissions test (which lasts about 20 minutes). The use of this type of software is common in vehicles sold in Europe thanks to a loophole in European Union laws. This came to light back in May as the German Government asked Opel for more information on software used on the Zafira diesel that would turn off the emission controls. Bild goes on to say that U.S. authorities have set up a meeting with Audi officials this week to discuss this. Not surprisingly, Audi and the EPA declined to comment. With a supercharged 6.2L V8 producing 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque, the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 looks to be giving a number of sports car a run for their money. But getting into one will cost you a fair penny. Chevrolet has announced the Camaro ZL1 will begin at $62,135 for the coupe and $69,135 for the convertible. Both prices include destination. “The Camaro ZL1 offers supercar performance with daily-driver refinement, a combination that stacks up against any other sports coupe – at any price – around the world,” said Steve Majoros, director of Chevrolet marketing. If that is a bit too much, Chevrolet has the 1LE package available for the LT and SS models. The LT 1LE comes with FE3 suspension package with stabilizer bars, mechanical limited-slip differential, upgraded cooling system, and four-piston Brembo brakes up front. The SS 1LE features the FE4 suspension package with magnetic ride control, electronic limited slip differential, six-piston Brembo brakes, and a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires. Mercedes-Benz is planning to launch a handful of electric vehicles in the near future, and those vehicles will be part of a new subbrand. Bloomberg has learned from sources that the German automaker will be taking a page out of BMW's playbook and introduce a new subbrand that will be comprised of two electric sedans and two SUVs - something we first reported back in May. A name hasn't been chosen yet according to the sources. What is for certain is that Mercedes will show off a concept electric SUV at the Paris Motor Show in September. Using a new platform for electric vehicles, the concept is expected to boast a range of 310 miles. Mercedes hopes to start selling vehicles under this subbrand before the end of the decade. But doing a subbrand for electric vehicles is a risky proposition. BMW's i hasn't made any real impact in terms of sales or recognition. This has caused the brand to delay plans for another i model. Whether Mercedes-Benz is able to avoid the pitfallls remains to be seen. Source: Bloomberg View full article

What does the future of Jaguar's lineup look like? According to Automobile Magazine, expect EVs and no replacement for the XK Coupe and Convertible. Let's begin with the EVs. First up is a replacement for the XJ known under the codename of X590. The report says X590 will be a four-door coupe with a liftback (something like an Audi A7). This is a compromise between infighting with Jaguar Land Rover boss Ralf Speth (wanted a three-box design to replace the XJ) and Jaguar design chief Ian Callum (wanted a big coupe). The underpinnings is a new architecture that is capable of handling the hardware needed for autonomous technologies. All-wheel drive will come standard. The plan is to have X590 possibly launch in 2018, beating models that are expected from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. While Jaguar hopes this model is a success, the current XJ will be sold alongside it for a time in case it flops. (Secretly, we're hoping there is a new XJ coming as well.) Following a year later will be an electric SUV. Now this isn't an electrified version of the F-Pace. According to the report, this model was originally going to be a Range Rover before becoming a Jaguar. “Although it looks sleek, modern and aerodynamically efficient, this model will be rated as an SUV in North-America. All the SUV-defining hard points are there in place,” said a source about the design. This model will be offered with the choice of rear-wheel or all-wheel drive, and three different battery packs. The plan is to build around 20,000 to 30,000 X590s, and 30,000 to 50,000 of the new SUV. We should also mention the replacement for the XK has canceled, most likely due to Jaguar's electric ambitions. We know the replacement would have used a stretched version of the F-Type's platform. Skoda has been cagey with saying when a possible decision of selling vehicles in U.S. will come. Ask anyone at the Czech automaker and they'll say there isn't a timeframe. It seems now there is a timeframe. German business daily Handelsblatt recently talked with Skoda CEO Bernhard Maier. During their talk, Maier revealed a decision for the U.S. will happen sometime next year. “In the course of the coming year, we want to decide on the question of North America,” said Maier. “When we talk about our plans until 2025, then you cannot leave out one of the most important car markets in the world. Therefore, we examine under what conditions and with what cars the entrance to the U.S. market would be possible.” Skoda wants to be in 120 global markets by 2025. At the moment, Skoda is in 102 markets. This will grow next year as the brand will enter Iran, South Korea, and Singapore. Source: Handelsblatt (Global Edition) View full article

The mid-engine Corvette is the rumor that won't die. This past year has seen speculation explode thanks to spy shots showing a mid-engine mule running around GM's Milford Proving Grounds. The Detroit News has published a report today saying the model would arrive in 2019 along with other details about the model. We're going to give a summary of the most interesting bits from the report, but we highly recommend checking out the full piece. Has the codename of Emperor and is expected to debut in early 2018 (most likely Detroit) The goal for this model is to try and draw younger folks into buying a Corvette. The average age of a Corvette owner is around 59 years old. A source says the mid-engine Corvette will become the sole variant after 2021. This is when the current C7 Corvette will end production. Could be the basis for a sports car wearing the Cadillac badge Bob Lutz and former chief engineer for the Corvette, Tom Wallace said they got plans for a mid-engine Corvette approved in 2007. These plans would be shelved only a couple years later due to the bankruptcy. Source: The Detroit News View full article

Tesla announced their second quarter results yesterday and the news wasn't great. The electric automaker posted a net loss of $293 million for the quarter. It also looks like Tesla might fall short of delivering 80,000 vehicles goal for this year. The quarter saw Tesla move 14,402 vehicles (9,764 Model S and 4,638 Model Xs). Add in the first quarter deliveries of 11,507 vehicles, and Tesla is very short of meeting this goal. "We are clearly disappointed with our delivery numbers," said Tesla CFO Jason Wheeler. It should be noted that 'almost half' of Q2's deliveries took place within the last four weeks of the quarter. "We were in production hell for the first six months of the year. Man, it was hell. And we managed to climb out of hell partway through June and now the production line is humming and our suppliers mostly have their $h! together," said Tesla CEO Elon Musk during a conference call with analysts. There was some good news for Tesla in the second quarter. The company posted $1.6 billion in revenue for the quarter. Source: Tesla, Reuters View full article

Kia is planning to follow Hyundai with offering a range of performance models around the world. However, Kia isn't planning to make them as hardcore as Hyundai's upcoming N models. Hyundai and Kia’s performance development boss Albert Biermann tells Autocar that Kia's GT models will differ Hyundai's N models as they aren't designed to be taken on a racetrack. This means GT models will likely not see such tech as an electronically controlled limited slip differential that will be coming on the European-market i30 N Plus. What they will see is improvements in terms of performance, handling, and looks. Biermann admits that “GT is not right for all Kia models," but most of Kia's mainstream lineup will likely see a GT variant. Some of the models likely to get a GT variant include the next-generation Rio, Optima, and the next-generation ProCeed (unrelated to the Forte compact). "The Ceed GT is a very balanced car, but we are a few years further down the road, and if we were to engineer it now it would have some more spice to it.” Biermann also revealed that standard Kia models will get different chassis settings from their Hyundai brethren as a way to differentiate them. “Kia is meant to be more emotional than Hyundai and we have to make cars that reflect that when you drive them,” said Biermann.
