Collaborations between automakers and tech companies are becoming commonplace as self-driving vehicles and a sharing economy are starting to enter the limelight. Doing either one of these alone is difficult and it appears one automaker is realizing this. Bloomberg reports that Hyundai is in talks with Google about a possible partnership. Hyundai Motor President Jeong Jin Haeng said in an interview the two companies share some "common areas that may require cooperation". One of those common areas is autonomous technologies. Both Hyundai and Kia are lagging far behind when it comes to this. It doesn't hurt that former Hyundai USA CEO, John Krafcik heads up Google's autonomous vehicle program. “Hyundai is lagging behind the competition to develop autonomous vehicles. It’s not a choice but a critical prerequisite for Hyundai to cooperate with IT companies, such as Google, to survive in the near future,” said Ko Tae Bong, senior auto analyst at Hi Investment & Securities Co. Ford is making a big push in autonomous vehicles by announcing plans to put a fully autonomous car into production by 2021. But you will not be able to buy one. Instead, Ford will be building these vehicles for ride-sharing services. “The next decade will be defined by automation of the automobile, and we see autonomous vehicles as having as significant an impact on society as Ford’s moving assembly line did 100 years ago. We’re dedicated to putting on the road an autonomous vehicle that can improve safety and solve social and environmental challenges for millions of people – not just those who can afford luxury vehicles," said Mark Fields, Ford president and CEO in a statement yesterday. Ford says the vehicles will feature autonomous technology that is classified by the SAE as 'level 4' - a vehicle will perform all critical driving functions and monitor the road during a trip. The company expects their first autonomous vehicles to not have a steering wheel or pedals. To make this goal, Ford will be increasing their autonomous vehicle test fleet to 30 vehicles by the end of the year. Next year will see the company tripling that amount to 90 vehicles. The aim is to quickly mass-produce a more affordable automotive LiDAR sensor. Ford has a longstanding relationship with Velodyne, and was among the first to use LiDAR for both high-resolution mapping and autonomous driving beginning more than 10 years ago SAIPS: Ford has acquired the Israel-based computer vision and machine learning company to further strengthen its expertise in artificial intelligence and enhance computer vision. SAIPS has developed algorithmic solutions in image and video processing, deep learning, signal processing and classification. This expertise will help Ford autonomous vehicles learn and adapt to the surroundings of their environment Nirenberg Neuroscience LLC: Ford has an exclusive licensing agreement with Nirenberg Neuroscience, a machine vision company founded by neuroscientist Dr. Sheila Nirenberg, who cracked the neural code the eye uses to transmit visual information to the brain. This has led to a powerful machine vision platform for performing navigation, object recognition, facial recognition and other functions, with many potential applications. For example, it is already being applied by Dr. Nirenberg to develop a device for restoring sight to patients with degenerative diseases of the retina. Before the 2016 Woodward Dream Cruise kicks off in Detroit later this week, Dodge has revealed two heritage-inspired packages: the 2017 Challenger T/A and Charger Daytona. The Challenger T/A package adds “air catcher” headlights, ducted hood and modified cool air box from the Hellcat; new exhaust system, and wider wheels. The T/A also adds the 'Super Track Pak' which includes a lowered suspension, high-performance Bilstein shock absorbers, performance brake linings, a three-mode electronic stability control (ESC) system, and a set of Goodyear F1 tires. Outside, the hood is finished in satin black along with various accents. This package is available with either the 5.7 or 6.4L HEMI V8. If you opt for the 6.4, you will get a set of Brembo brakes. Volkswagen is facing criminal charges over the diesel emission scandal in the U.S. The Wall Street Journal reports that investigators from the U.S. Justice Department have found evidence of criminal wrongdoing. It is unclear what the evidence is. According to sources, federal prosecutors are still trying to figure out what charges should be brought against Volkswagen. Sources go on to say that prosecutors and lawyers from Volkswagen have held preliminary discussions about the case. The two parties are trying to reach a settlement before the end of the year. A matter up for debate is whether the Justice Department will seek a guilty plea or a deferred prosecution agreement; a deal with the U.S. Government would aim to dismiss the charges at a later date if the automaker complies to terms of a settlement. Both Toyota and General Motors have gone down this route recently, dealing with safety issues. Investigators have been reviewing over 1.5 million documents as part of the criminal probe. Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates said back in June the probe involved “multiple individuals.” It is unknown if prosecutors are planning to charge Volkswagen employees over the diesel emission scandal. The announcement is part of Nissan's "Year of the Truck" – a new product onslaught of pickups, SUVs and CUVs. Vehicles covered by the new warranty – which includes basic and powertrain coverage – include all TITAN V8 gasoline-powered models and diesel and V8 gasoline-powered 2017 TITAN XD models, including both 4x4 and 4x2 drive configurations, in Crew Cab and recently revealed Single Cab models. The 2017 TITANs and TITAN XDs are scheduled to begin arriving at Nissan dealers nationwide later this month. "We're pleased to now offer the same confidence-inspiring protection as our commercial vehicles for our entire range of 2017 TITAN and TITAN XD full-size pickups," said Fred Diaz, division vice president and general manager, North America Trucks and Light Commercial Vehicles, Nissan North America, Inc. Nissan introduced "America's Best Commercial Van Warranty" – also 5 years / 100,000 miles – in June 2014 as a demonstration of confidence in its expanding light commercial vehicle lineup. The results have been very positive, with Nissan NV Cargo and Passenger van sales up nearly 10 percent in 2016; NV200 cargo van sales have increased 17 percent through July.
