An improved version of the 2016 Cadillac ELR plug-in hybridicon1.png is in the works, Cadillac spokesman David Caldwell confirmed for Edmunds on Monday. The 2016 ELR is expected to debut in November at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Changes include "engineering enhancements," Caldwell said. He would not provide details on the changes.

Caricon1.png shoppers should expect to see the revised ELR, which was all-new for the 2014 model year, at dealerships in the first half of next year.

The changes are designed to make the ELR more competitive against a growing list of rivals, including the BMW i3, Porsche Panamera SE Hybrid and Tesla Model S. The ELR is a premium version of the Chevrolet Volt.

The ELR starts at $75,995, including a $995 destination charge. Pricing is before a federal tax credit of up to $7,500 and any state or local tax credits. Some Cadillac dealers have been offering incentives as high as $30,000 in order to boost sales of the ELR, according to industry analystsicon1.png.

"Inventory levels have come down quickly with these incentives, so I would expect them to start scaling back fairly soon," Joe Langley, a principalanalysticon1.png for IHS Automotive, told Edmunds.

Caldwell said some of the large discounts were applied to "demo models" of the ELR with several hundred miles on the odometer.

Car shoppers will note that there is no 2015 Cadillac ELR. Caldwell explained that this is a "technicality" based on when the car debuted around January 1, 2014.

"The car is still on sale," he said. "The factory produced most of the carsicon1.pngthat would satisfy U.S. distribution."

ELR production has been halted due to inventory and an extensive makeover of the Detroit-Hamtramck plant where the ELR is built, along with other GM cars, including the Chevrolet Impalaicon1.png.

Caldwell said the plant is scheduled to resume production around Thanksgiving. Uhh Oh... Caddy haters done gone and woke up the mighty General. :pbjtime:  I really think the naysayers who wish to see Cadillac fail should have kept their effing mouths shut. 

 

I think that we'll be seeing more range, possibly a less expensive price, and probably a performance gain. In fact I think they will most likely be debuting Voltec 2.0 in this car since the new Volt is gonna be a '16 as well.

Another way would be to drop the ridiculous electric propulsion crap and put the 2.0t in there with a 6 speed manual as an option.  :smilewide:

And charge $39,995.  If an ATS coupe with rear drive on Alpha chassis is around $40k, the same powertrain on a Cruze chassis is worth less.  It could compete with the Audi TT.

But the chassis was already developed for the Cruze, Verano and Volt.  All they did was put a new body on it and the Volt powertrain was already there.  If they ripped the Volt powertrain and put a 2.0 turbo in it, GM already has that in the form of a Buick Verano which is like $30k.   Ocnblu wanted an ELR body/interior and a Buick Verano powertrain, to me $40k would be a fair price for that.
