At next month's Tokyo Motor Show, we'll finally see the production versions of the often teased Toyota FT-86 coupe. But that isn't stopping details of the new vehicles from leaking out.

Autocar is reporting today that the FT-86 will have a curb weight close to 1,100 kg, which is about 2,425 lbs. To put that into prospective, the Hyundai Genesis coupe is 800 lbs heavier when equipped with it's turbo-4.

I think this is more a junior sports car than a next-gen Supra would be. But there hasn't been a RWD Celica since... wow, I don't remember when.

That's amazing to see a car that light these days..makes me wonder just how small it is. The FT86 name was meant to harken back to the last RWD Corolla hatchback of the '80s (the AE86 which has a cult following).

Hard to believe today, but at one time there were versions of the Corolla that could be considered 'fun' and 'sporty'. For that matter, it's hard to recall Toyotas that were fun and sporty at all (been so long since the MR2, Supra, and Celica)...

Wasn't "Celica" originally a Corolla trim line?

Couldn't find anything about that in the Book of Knowledge, but another strange piece of trivia--the Camry was originally badged in Japan as the Celica Camry---though it was a rebadged 4dr Carina ('80-82).

The older Toyotas were cool, including the Original FJ...

I was wrong. I was thinking of these... which I always felt looked like Celicas

These cars are the AE86 that inspired the FT-86. While the Celica could work as the name of the car, it has a little bit too much of a "secretary's car" connotation. The AE-86 Toyota Corollas went away after the '87 model year. The last RWD Celica was in '85. Afterwards, the Supra was no longer a Celica variant.

I hope it sells like hotcakes and builds a rep as a cult car. That's the only way any copycatting will happen.
